Movieline Interview with Robert Pattinson

Robert Pattinson probably didn’t want to spend his Saturday at a press junket any more than the journalists who greeted him there, but we’re all professionals here. Especially Pattinson, whose new film Remember Me features the young megastar in a searching departure from his Twilight turn as Edward Cullen. There’s still the young torment, the dilemma of first love (with a fellow NYU student played by Emilie De Ravin) and, well, that awe-inspiring hair. But in determining what makes his character Tyler Hawkins tick, there’s also a somewhat shocking awareness of mortality beneath all that gorgeous sulking. Between his aloof father (Pierce Brosnan), his compassionate mother (Lena Olin), his confidante little sister (Ruby Jerins) and the ghost of his dead older brother, Tyler is always just on the verge of some discovery — and despite what Pattinson’s fans may crave, it’s not quite catharsis.

I’d love to be more specific, and I will be as Remember Me’s review embargo drops prior to its March 12 opening. Until then, Pattinson helped Movieline make at least a little sense of it all at last week’s press gathering in New York:

Speaking about your role in this film, your co-star Pierce Brosnan said, “[h]e’s courageous to find a piece like this, knowing that he has the Twilight franchise breathing down his throat, and you know it will be up to him to go out there and seek these films between these mega-movies he’s about to do.” How do you respond to that?
I don’t think it’s courageous. I think it’s more courageous to do something to try to compete with it. They’re so huge. Like, the idea of doing a massive film, [for] which everybody says, “This is going to make tons of money,” and the whole point of it is to be huge or a summer blockbuster or something like that? The idea of doing something like that between the Twilight films is terrifying because you put yourself out way more on the line. I mean, I keep wanting to do ensemble pieces where all the other parts are great, and you can get really great actors in so you don’t have to bear the whole burden of the movie. If I could do supporting roles in things, then I’d love to do that. But it’s difficult to get supporting roles because it would be really weird most of the time. “Well, there’s the guy from Twilight playing the parking warden,” or something. But I would love to do that.

One of my maiden problems that I’ve been trying to learn about is how to pace a performance to drive the film forward instead of just concentrating on character. I mean, I just want to concentrate on character all the time, and I don’t really know how pacing works. Yet. So I try to choose little random projects where I can completely relate to the story — so I don’t have to take any particular risks for it.

Shooting in downtown Manhattan notoriously became a kind of circus atmosphere, to say the least. How did that affect your psychology — and thus the kind of angst-y psychology of the character? That discomfort in your own skin?
There are some parts — like the part I’m playing now (in Bel Ami) — where it would have really helped having loads of paparazzi up in your face all the time. He’s sort of such a self-contained, very, very confident man. But it was really annoying for Tyler, because there’s something about… He’s always looking for things. You wanted to be free to look around. He kept looking around, and if you looked up from the pavement you can hear all the shutters accelerate all of the sudden. So I’m looking down all the time. It’s always going to be difficult if you’re playing a normal guy and you walk around the corner and everyone’s taking pictures. Because you’re going into it with the mentality that it’s a struggle to not go into the scene with that mentality. But it got better throughout the shoot. As soon as you get used to it, it just becomes like any other job. It’s just part of the furniture.

Did you have a favorite scene, then?
On this? [Contemplating.] If I think of it afterward it’s probably not the one, but I love the scene where he goes into the school to confront [his sister]’s bullies. Mainly because it’s just a fantasy! Being the older brother, you always want to do stuff like that. It sounds like the most unprofound thing, but it did feel really good doing it. But there were tons of things in this. I think the movie sort of works as… I don’t know if “cohesive” is the right word, but it’s all part of one big thing. It doesn’t really feel like set-piece scenes. It’s really weird, and I was really conscious of that when I was filming it. It seemed like everything was very connected. There are some movies you do where you say, “Oh, this scene was really good to do, and the other ones are just sort of, you know, fill-ins.” It seemed like everything came from the same place.

Contest Winner Talks to Chris Weitz about Robert Pattinson and New Moon

JennyBRUTAL won the Twitter Twilight Sweeps Contest and was able to talk to New Moon director Chris Weitz on the phone and ask him several questions about the making of the movie. I know Edward’s car is now a dark silver, but was there any reason for the change?

Availability. Volvo wanted to introduce a new car into the series, instead of the older model. So they provided a newer model, brown Volvo. Immediately we knew it had to be repainted, and chose a dark, non-shiny, black colour. It added more to the first Edward scene in the movie, the feeling is upbeat but the colour of the vehicle adds to the danger lurking.

I really enjoyed the added scene with Victoria swimming towards Bella. (The book hints to the orange colour the water was reflecting, in a later revelation by Bella.) How did this scene come to be?

Well, the orange coloured water wouldn’t have looked right in the scene so we put her in the water visibly. That scene was difficult because we wanted to film her swimming towards Bella but it had to be at a distance. If it wasn’t at a distance fans would wonder why Victoria didn’t just get her in that short scene, but at the same time it had to feel threatening. That was all shot in Vancouver in a swimming pool, we had the actors underwater with four or five frog men with air tubes for security purposes. We also had green screens in the water surrounding the actors so we could CGI in all the particals in the water. Theres actually a program to add in all of the floating debris and colour differences in the water after filming. Kristen had a cold at the time and was scared of drowning. We had to force her to stay in the water [laughter] But Rob was more comfortable in the water, hes had to shoot underwater scenes in the past. [Harry Potter]

Were there any scenes that you would have loved to see in the film but never made the final cut?
Yes, one scene. Theres a scene with a motorcycle crash that gives more of a sense of danger. The reason why it didn’t make the final cut was because of weather reasons, it was just too sunny to be considered Forks. The DVD will include that scene as well as extended scenes. Some of the extended scenes include more of Edward’s visit to the Volturi concerning his immortality and more from the scene between Carlisle and Bella. [when he was stitching Bella up.] In one of the early drafts of the script this scene was not in the movie. Immediately I knew that had to change, it was essential to the story line.

Our Event Representative’s Report From the Munich Fan Event

Fan Event in Munich

I think I should start with the beginning of the whole story: I was in America when Hypovereinsbank gave away tickets for the event. I tried to get two of them but even before the website was open the server crashed. I had to go to bed and my friend in Germany tried for several hours to get tickets. In the morning I got the good news, terrorized the school and when I went back to Germany we started planning everything as we live 380 miles away from Munich.

On November, 13th we started our trip, visited Munich and on the next morning we went to the Olympiahalle. We were in front of the hall at 9 in the morning; we could not get in until 11:30. We weren’t in the front row, but our location was good enough and we had a great view of the place where all the reporters stood. They were interviewing lots people and we were constantly being asked to scream for the cameras. After a while, as the screaming started to die down they took out their secret weapon: a snap of Rob as Edward and everybody was screaming again. And then the nightmare started: at our entrance there were so many people, and they were all constantly pushing making it difficult for the crowd to even breathe. The pushing got harder and people even started fainting, screaming and getting completely crushed. After half an hour or pushing we were finally in, ran to our seats and we were already completely exhausted.
They started by showing the German trailer of New Moon and trailers of other movies. As the programme began a few bands were brought in, and the atmosphere in the stadium was unbelievable. Bands were being asked which team they are and we were shown pictures of Kristen and Rob. We were also told that there were between 15,000 and 20,000 fans attending this event.

As soon as the moderators told us that the cast was about to arrive (after 3 and a half hours of boring bands and cycle races) there seemed to be a major problem: 2 cars were in front of the entrance and Taylor, Rob, Kris and Chris couldn’t get in. When the cars were finally moved out fo the way one of the moderators presented the New Moon trailer once again and new, unpublished scenes from the movie. Okay, the scenes weren’t new to me but there were many people who had not seen them and the mood in the hall suddenly was indescribable. Everybody was taking photos, filming and, of course, screaming. As soon as the trailer and scenes were over, the lights went on again and it got as loud as I’ve ever heard in my whole life before. The moderator told us that were supposed to be quiet when the stars are in but we could scream as loud as we want when they come in. He shouldn’t have said that because the fans took that really very seriously. The stars came on stage and the entire hall went crazy. The cast looked completely overwhelmed! As if they couldn’t believe what was happening there. They were looking around, whispering to each other and laughing. After a minute the moderator started the Q&A. He was asking the normal mainstream questions and they were answering friendly and respectfully. As always Taylor spoke directly to the people and said that the whole Twilight phenomenon would be nothing without the fans and he was so right with that! Rob just got one question to answer and he was perplexed when he got asked. He looked like he was daydreaming before and I think they all did. They all looked really tired (except for Taylor) and I have to say that their answers weren’t creative but you have to keep in mind that they were nearly in another country every day in Europe and that must be unbelievably anxious. When the Q&A was over, the boss of the most popular teen magazine in Europa called Bravo came on stage and said that the actors would get a prize, the Bravo Gold Otto, for Twilight as Movie of the year. They all got an award and took photos together.
At the end, the stars waved and said goodbye to the fans who were all screaming again and after 10 minutes it was over and everyone’s mood was turning sour. Then the only German band from the New Moon Bonus Soundtrack came on stage and then we left.
We were there for 4 hours to see 15 minutes of movie clips and spend 10 minutes with the stars but it was all worth it! My voice was gone but it was such a great experience! I have never been in such craziness but it was real fun and I think I would definitely do it again!

Lucero says the movie theatre was packed, the film contained a lot of drama as well as funny moments, and the performances were much stepped up from Twilight.

More pictures and a Report on the London Fan Event from our Site Event Rep

11th November-The day the UK Twilight fans have been waiting for months, the day the Twilight cast were going to create a frenzy at Rob’s own hometown LONDON!

Well, I was one of the lucky fans who got the opportunity to be a part of the most anticipated New Moon UK Fan party! The weather couldn’t have been perfect for a vampire film as it was cold and wet. But that didn’t stop the fans from their passion as some of them queued up from the night before just to catch a glimpse of their favourite stars! I headed to London in the early hours of the morning! Upon arrival, we saw the preparation for tonight’s event. Barriers, posters, fake moon, bright lights, and cameras were all ready to set up and the queue for both red carpet and the New Moon fan event was growing at a steady space along with the excitement.

The best thing about attending these events for me is to share the same passion I have for Twilight with Twihards. We spent the day talking about how we all got into the saga and our own opinions on the film, soundtrack and the cast!

As we got closer to the hour, the excitement kept increasing! After collecting the wristbands, we walked down the red carpet and entered the venue decked with red and black lighting and smoked stage. The background on the stage was a ‘full moon’ and we had two screens on left and right hand sides that showed all the action happening at the red carpet. Amongst the cast members, the first to arrive was the beautiful Robert Pattinson! The screams at the fan party was deafening! Fans from all ages were hyperventilating, chanting his name and flashing away their cameras! Nora Carlucci who was at the red carpet, showed her passion through a sketch of Rob and Kristen as Edward and Bella. She told www.robert-pattinson.co.uk that Rob was delighted by her art! Not only that but she also managed to get autographs from both of them!

Inside the venue, the fans were getting entertained by the Band of Skulls and The Magic Numbers and were waiting anxiously to meet the cast! Nick Grimshaw, the host for the evening announced he was going to welcome the guest after few minutes while we had the Volturi guards facing us as the crew arranged the chairs. The anticipation kept building and the heart beat kept increasing every second!

First to come on stage was the lovely director Chris Weitz. Next we welcomed the beautiful, Kristen Stewart who wore an eye catching a neon yellow, black and blue striped top with a coordinating skirt. Then for our viewing pleasure we had the handsome Robert Pattinson and last but not the least with the cheeky smile entered Taylor Lautner! The venue thundered with the loudest screams along with the occasional shout outs of ‘I love you Rob’, ‘Marry me’ and ‘Bite me’.

Without any delay, Nick started the Q & A. All the questions were submitted by the fans who were attending the event. First question to Rob was whether he really did base Edward on James Dean to which he replied, giggling ‘I don’t know’. When the fans kept squealing at the mention of his name, Rob started saying random words such as thief to see their reaction. Moreover, he also asked the host to call him Steve/John instead. If Taylor were to give advice to Jacob he would ask him not to take his shirt off to wipe blood off someone. The fans then chanted and asked him to “take it (shirt) off”. Poor Taylor kept blushing away! Kristen’s favourite part of filming of New Moon was in Italy when she had to push Edward out of sunlight. *spoilers* She emphasised more on the scene when both Edward and Bella “reconcile” their love for each other and how they don’t need to express it in words. However, Rob’s favourite was the break up scene. He told us that he misses Battersea Park in London and the Twilight fans the most. When the screaming went a bit too far the host asked the crowd to shut up. Kristen in full support defended the fans. She also said if she was friends with Bella, she would make it easier for her and ask Bella to date Jacob. Rob told us that the dedication from the fans is amazing but the screaming was for Edward and not him. Kristen also told the crowd that amongst the cast members Taylor is similar to the character he plays.

Like all good things, the Q & A ended but the swooning continued as the fans recalled every moment of it. Whether it was Rob’s giggles or him running hand through his hair.

Overall the cast came across as extremely friendly and charming, Rob is just as gorgeous in real life and I am really excited to bring you these videos of an amazing night! I do have to apologise in advance for the excessive screaming that was going on around me and for the blurry parts of the video, especially as Rob was heading towards us. The excitement got to us but I did try to edit it and bring you the best parts of my footage. Please enjoy the videos and comment below.

MTV BRINGS KILLER MUSIC TO FANS IN TV SPECIAL “ULALUME: HOWLING AT NEW MOON”

After months of little more than tabloid and gossip new, we are now in a what seems to be a well-spring of news, photos, appearances, and interviews from all of our favorite Twilight-Saga Stars, which is to be expected with the fast approaching New Moon so close on the horizon! Perhaps one of the best surprises; however, one of the biggest and best surprises has Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart appearing on the “MTV Halloween Music Festival Special “Ulalume: Howling at New Moon!” They will be introducing a new clip from–you guessed it– “New Moon” on the program!

Cast from “The Twilight Saga: New Moon” Introduces Exclusive Sneak-Peek from the Film in this Television Special Premiering October 30th on MTV, MTV2 & mtvU.
MTV unleashes insane musical mayhem along with a sneak peek at an exclusive clip from “The Twilight Saga: New Moon” and commentary from cast members in the network’s first-ever Halloween special, “Ulalume: Howling at New Moon.” The one-hour program, premiering on MTV at 9pm ET/PT on Friday, October 30, 2009, will feature explosive performances by Paramore, AFI, Dead By Sunrise and Kid Cudi as they rock the stage from MTV’s Ulalume Halloween Festival, hosted by tattoo vixen and star of L.A. ‘New Moon’ Cardboard Cutouts Available for Pre-order

Unlike the first movie of the Twilight Saga, which only had one or two cardboard cutouts of the cast, New Moon is providing fans with life-size cardboard cutouts of practically the entire cast! There is, of course, the Edward, Bella, Jacob trio-here in the gallery, along with the other four Edward, Bella, Jacob, and Alice. There are also cutouts of Victoria, Laurent, Carlisle, Emmett, and Jasper.

You may preorder these life-size cutouts at Incredible Gifts. The site even offers a 25% discount, and they are available beginning October 1st.
