Film4’s Report from the “Remember Me” Premiere

Film4’s Rachel George attended the London premiere of “Remember Me” last night and has kindly sent us her report of the event. You can check it out below and you can also view a slideshow of Film4’s premiere photos HERE.

Last night I developed profound industrial deafness from all the screaming. It was totally worth it. Every 16 year olds’ (and a few Twilight Moms’) obsession, Robert Pattinson, graced the red carpet in Leicester Square for the premiere of his new movie Remember Me.

Looking every bit as biteable as he does playing vegetarian vampire Edward Cullen (if slightly more pink-skinned) in a suit jacket and light blue shirt, Rob proved he’s not only a decent actor but a lovely, charming man, whose self deprecating, thoughtful, unaffected interview persona is utterly real. The levels of adoration Robert Pattinson inspires seems to make words like ‘heartthrob’ redundant. Fans slept overnight in Leicester Square to see their obsession, the boy from Barnes with the semi-fro, and their patience was rewarded. R-Pattz spent at least an hour and a half speaking to fans, signing books, posters, notepads and hopefully not expertly folded marriage contracts. Read more after the cut.

He posed for photos, joked and hugged the squealing girls (and a few boys) who’d waited for hours for him, going back to fans even when his people were trying to pull him away to speak to the waiting throngs of press and cameras.

One Twi-hard, Mel Webber, 25, said “When Rob came back over to the lines, after speaking to the press, he checked with fans where he’d gotten up to so he didn’t miss anyone out. He signed my copy of Twilight with a legible ‘R’. I’m still shaking!”

He ended up delaying the start of the Remember Me screening, and the subsequent press conference, utterly cementing your humble reporter’s obsession with the vampire-acting, piano-playing shampoo-shunner. When Rob finally introduced the film, a tale of love and grief set in New York City, after almost two hours on the red carpet, he promised he’d reimburse us all for having to buy our own popcorn. Sigh. Only 16 weeks to go until Eclipse…

Depp, Damon, DiCaprio, and Pattinson all wanted you to choose them this past weekend, offering a quartet of movies that, taken together, might be read as the resting pulse of serious, mainstream American cinema. Which is why I’ve always had a particular fondness for springtime wide releases: They’re so content to be what they are. There’s no pretense, no great expectations. Spring movies don’t rattle their chains and bellow like summer joy-ride blockbusters; they don’t hustle for prestige (with the best of manners, of course) like autumnal Oscar bait. What you see is what you get.

And by that measure, Alice in Wonderland, Green Zone, Shutter Island, and Remember Me comprise a pretty classy assortment pack. [...]

NJ Interview with Robert Pattinson

NJ’s Stephen Whitty posted a new interview with Robert Pattinson, and you can read the full interview after the cut.

“I don’t know why I didn’t see it coming,” Robert Pattinson says with a small smile. “I thought I’d be doing this tiny little film in New York, just hang out in New York.”

It didn’t quite work out that way.

Pattinson made the “tiny little film,” all right — a perfectly right-sized indie called “Remember Me” that opened Friday, with Pattinson and Emilie de Ravin as college lovers and Pierce Brosnan and Chris Cooper as the fathers who inevitably complicate things.

It was the filming itself that was over the top.

“It was nightmarish,” says director Allen Coulter, who handled the on-location shoot. “How he managed it, I don’t know. The paparazzi and the hordes of females?”

At one point in the movie, Pattinson’s character — a Holden Caulfield-ish rich kid named Tyler — has a chat with his tween sister in a city park. Coulter says hundreds of screaming fans showed up, hoping for a glimpse of the “Twilight” phenomenon.

“Just bedlam,” the filmmaker says. “But I thought he handled it very well. He thought about nothing but the film. He’s quite an actor.”

Co-star Brosnan — who wryly allows that “I’ve had my own fair share of admirers, long may it last” — says he was impressed by how Pattinson has been handling the “vortex of fame.”

“As a man of certain years and time in this business, and having sons, I want the best for this young man in every possible way,” he says. “And I think he’s acquitting himself grandly. I think he’s got a head on his shoulders.”

“Pierce was very mentoring on the set,” Coulter says. “He felt very paternal, certainly.”

The younger star’s appearances in public require a certain amount of forethought, subterfuge, quick thinking and stolid security. (During this interview, a very large and unsmiling man stood outside the door to his suite). The details of his private life — which he works hard to keep private — are the subject of rumor, analysis and outright fiction.

Case in point: his “Twilight” co-star Kristen Stewart. Since that movie series began, fans — and celebrity muckrakers — have tried to link them. First, the young stars denied a romance. Then they simply said nothing. Finally, haltingly, the actor confirmed to a British paper, “We are together, yes.”

But the two young stars still play it carefully, avoiding being photographed together, entering parties separately. “If there’s a photo, they’ll write a story about it,” a wised-up Pattinson observes. “If there’s not a photo, no one seems to care.”

Pattinson — who is rather shy and stammering in real life — doesn’t want to say anything more about it now; at a round-table interview late in the day, just an allusion to “your girlfriend” makes him laugh a little uncomfortably and roll his eyes before carefully saying nothing.

You can’t blame him. Any quote he gives is analyzed like some utterance from the Oracle of Delphi — or the Federal Reserve. When Details magazine recently put him in a Helmut Newton-ish photo shoot full of naked women, he joked that he was “allergic to vaginas.” The net erupted in a flurry of snarky posts and head-shaking questions: Was Rob Pattinson really gay?

“People take everything so literally,” he says now, running a hand through his eternally tousled hair.

It is all a little silly. But it also explains why, over a long day of press conferences, round-table interviews and private chats, the actor — who describes himself as “sort of uncynical and innocent” about love — is reluctant to give away too much about his private life.

“When the spotlight seems to be quite centered on you, the best thing I think anyway is to stay as much of a mystery as you can,” he says. “Don’t try to label yourself, don’t put yourself out there, because that only creates stories. . . . I don’t think your public persona is in any way helpful to your career.”

So here, with and without his help, are a few answers to the mystery of Robert Pattinson.

The beginnings

He was born in London in 1986; his mother worked for a modeling agency and his father was an upscale car dealer. He had two older sisters, who liked to dress him up as a girl (here comes another round of gossip), and attended a school he didn’t care for. He loved music — particularly guitar and piano — and by 12 had begun to do some modeling.

Acting, though, still wasn’t quite on his radar.

“I’ve always really, really, really, really liked film,” he says (and proves it, later on, by casually referencing classic Jack Nicholson performances and obscure Godard works). “I always watched a ridiculous amount of movies, and was quite educated about them from a very young age, but I never put it together about wanting to become involved with it.”

Then he joined an amateur drama club “as kind of a lark.” That he was good at it — that he enjoyed it — surprised him. (“I don’t like showing off — I don’t even like performing that much.”) But he started getting some parts on British television. And then came the role as the tragic Cedric Diggory in “Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire.”

The Potter films were, of course, their own phenomenon. Yet Pattinson felt a little apart from it.

“The Potter films are shot at this random studio out in the middle of nowhere, so no one is waiting outside the gates for a glimpse, ever,” he says. “There’s nothing around. And I was still this complete enigma. I could kind of do what I wanted, and I could for ages. . . . I went to see Daniel (Radcliffe) do ‘Equus’ in London and no one even noticed me.”

Then Pattinson got the “Twilight” job. He knew the books were popular; he didn’t know what to expect from the movie. He got an apartment in Los Angeles and, after the shoot was finished, went back to looking for the next gig.

“Every single day, I’d go to a convenience store and get a bagel and a Snapple and read scripts,” he says. “And then, all of a sudden, I’m there on the cover of Entertainment Weekly. Okay. And then the next day I went out to get breakfast and everyone was staring. And then a month later, there was the first Comic-Con and everything exploded. People were just screaming. Screaming.”

The almost orgasmic reactions shocked Pattinson because “the books are really so much about chastity. But people sexualize it in their heads. It’s so odd, and so funny. The fan fiction that people write and post — all of it ends up with Edward and Bella in bed. Or Edward and Jacob. Or everybody! It sort of ignores the whole point.”

But then, he admits with a laugh, “I think I’ve got a problem with reading scripts. I always seem to take the opposite meaning. Almost every job I’ve ever done — I don’t know why this is — but I talk to people after I’ve read the script and they say, ‘You’re seeing this the wrong way entirely.’ I disagree with almost everyone about absolutely everything.”

But the people who know Pattinson — from studio employees to co-stars — agree on one thing: He’s a sweet, unaffected young man. The moody Edward of the “Twilight” saga, the impulsive, raging Tyler of “Remember Me” — they’re only proof of what a good actor he is.

Real acting chops

Brosnan talks admiringly about his “grace under pressure.” Coulter notes that although Pattinson had signed for his small drama before the fame of “Twilight” really “went haywire,” afterward he remained committed. He didn’t try to renegotiate the deal. He didn’t beg to back out so he could take on a bigger-budgeted, better-paying job.

“On the contrary, he really wanted to do it because he knew it was an opportunity to prove he wasn’t just this flash-in-the-pan guy from ‘Twilight,’” the director says. “And he does prove it … He’s not extremely experienced, and he’d be the first to say that. But he’s very smart and very dedicated and very, very hard on himself. Not on others — he’s generous and complimentary about everyone else. But he’s not generous with himself. And that’s actually a pretty endearing trait.”

Pattinson says he just appreciates the chance to prove he can be more than a glittering vampire.

“I was reading tons and tons of scripts and thinking about what to do after ‘Twilight,’ and there were so few that didn’t follow the same pattern,” he says. “Young guys, completely innocent virgins who learn the way of the world — every single story followed the same pattern, and (‘Remember Me’) didn’t really at all. It didn’t feel like it started at the beginning and ended at the end. It felt like it sort of started with chapter nine and ended seven chapters before you expected it to.”

Pattinson knows that people will attach outsized expectations to the movie just because of his participation. (“If it doesn’t make any money, what is he? What is his worth to the world?”) But he’s trying to ignore them. He’s already working on his next project, a new version of de Maupassant’s “Bel Ami,” playing a heartless seducer. And there is the third “Twilight” picture, “Eclipse,” scheduled for June — and, eventually, the series’ finale, “Breaking Dawn.”

After that? He shrugs and laughs.

“I don’t really know,” he says. “I hardly like any (scripts) I see. I’m sure it will end up looking quite random when you see what my next jobs are.”

Besides, right now, his main job is just trying to have a normal life.

He is not complaining, not really. And even if he’s sick of the paparazzi, he is certainly not whining about his fans, the “Twihards” who stand screaming outside premieres or shakily hand him photos to sign.

“People coming up to you in the street is nice,” he insists. “It’s just when people know they can make money off your life, that’s when it becomes difficult — because they’re relentless.”

So he has strategies.

“It’s a bit of a hassle, but if you make sure you don’t go where the crowds will be, if no one finds out where you’re staying or having dinner, then it’s fine,” he says. “People say I should just accept it, don’t let it rule my life, but having photographers surrounding me when I’m trying to have dinner? That’s not life for me at all. If you can avoid that — which is possible, most of the time — then it’s not crazy every single day.

“And then when it isn’t,” he adds with a grin, “then you can actually enjoy the kind of hysterical parts.”

Rob Discusses Fight Scenes and Accents

Nikki Baughan at Roll Credits has posted a great interview with Rob in which he discusses Remember Me, his fight scenes, the fans, and speaking with an American accent.

Were you hurt in that particular fight scene?
Oh no, not at all. The only thing that I hurt myself on was a bit they cut out of the movie where I kind of flipped out afterwards out of my own impotence in this fight. You walk into the big confrontation and end up getting completely destroyed by your competitor. I was hitting myself afterwards in a little spur of the moment thing which they cut out of the movie. I hit myself so hard, I was in so much pain for the rest of the shoot. It was the most stupid thing I’ve ever done.

Did you have any trouble with the New York Bronx accent?
I grew up watching American movies. I learned how to act, to whatever extent, by watching American movies way more than English ones so I kind of, in a lot of ways, feel more comfortable speaking in an American accent. It feels more real to me in a lot of ways.

‘Remember Me’ Has Solid Opening Weekend

Remember Me, which opened on Friday, has done well for itself at the box office, coming in third among this weekend’s other opening films with $8.3 million so far

The most oddly high-profile release of the weekend was the romantic drama Remember Me. The film was seen by many as a test of Twilight star Robert Pattinson’s draw as a movie star. Of course, if Summit was trying to prop up the numbers by attaching the Twilight Saga: Eclipse trailer to prints of Remember Me, it might have helped if they had NOT released the trailer online the day before the opening. So while some may decry the ‘mere’ $8.3 million, we must recall that a movie like this wouldn’t have made $1.75 if not for what drawing power Pattinson has. Sure Shia Labeouf can open slickly-marketed thrillers like Eagle Eye and Disturbia, but let’s see what happens when he has to open a movie all by himself that doesn’t already look particularly appealing.

Besides, as word leaked out about the film’s extended-middle finger of an ending, even some of Pattinson’s die hard fans apparently decided to stay away. Speaking of females, the gender split was 84/16 on this one. Point being, if he can open Remember Me to $8.3 million all by himself, he may just be a movie star.

Rob On the Downside of Fame

Katey Rich from Cinemablend has posted a fantastic interview with Rob in which he discusses Remember Me, filming in New York with fans all around, and the downside of fame.

Do you see this movie as an important step to show people you’re more than Twilight?
I think it’s an important step. I don’t think it’s to show people I’m more than Twilight. I have the same mentality about [the Twilight sequels]. I try to make a Twilight film to show I’m more than Twilight, whatever that means. You try and improve, you try and take things from each job you get. I’ve just sort of fallen into it. I’m just trying to figure out how to do things.

You’ve made a lot of distinctly independent films to kind of counterbalance Twilight. Do you plan to keep seeking these out?
Not necessarily. I just liked the script of this. The next few things I’m doing, I just liked the script. I’d be way more nervous doing a big kind of blockbuster which would go into the marketplace saying, “This has to be huge.” I like doing ensemble things with established actors who are really good, and scripts that are kind of different, and hope people will be interested in them.

Rob Autographs Guitar For Charity

Rob recently autographed a rare guitar at Norman’s Rare Guitars in L.A., a shop that donates signed guitars for auction to The Midnight Mission, a charity that benefits the homeless.

“He’s really a nice guy — very shy, very quiet,” Harris told Tonic. “People follow him around like crazy, so he kind of liked it because we’re a little off the path here, and the paparazzi didn’t really follow him in here. He’s friends with one of the fellows who works here from England. [Pattinson] came in, and he actually bought a nice guitar from us. He was playing this other guitar, so I said to him, ‘We’re doing this thing for the Midnight Mission, would you sign this guitar for me?’ He said, ‘I don’t do a lot of these things, but you seem like a good guy, and it seems like a good cause.’”

Parade.com’s Jeanne Wolf interviewed Robert Pattinson and found out a bit more about his character, Tyler, and about “Remember Me”. You can read the interview below.

The dating game.
“When it comes to the opposite sex, I’m not as fully confident as the guy I play. I don’t even remember the last time I asked someone out on a date, like, just went up to them and that’s the first thing I did. I’m much more self-conscious and not wanting to fail. So I tend to hold back.”

Ditto with unleashing his macho side.
“I related to Tyler in that I wish I could have done things like he did when I had the opportunity. There is something quite satisfying about being a little bit more reckless and even fighting. It’s quite cathartic to just sort of randomly start hitting someone. It was fun kind of, letting all your rage go on the set. We had this big scene where I punch out some guys. It went fine and nobody was really hurt at all. But, at the end, I was like doing this thing where I was hitting myself in the arm, sort of pumping myself up. They cut it out of the movie, but I punched myself so hard that I was in a lot of pain for the rest of the shoot. It was the most stupid thing I’ve ever done.”

He’s felt the pain before.
“I got beaten up by a lot of people when I was younger. I was a bit of an idiot, but I always thought the assaults were unprovoked. It was after I first started acting and I liked to behave like an actor, or how I thought an actor was supposed to be, and that apparently provoked a lot of people into hitting me.”

What he learned from Pierce Brosnan.
“We went out to dinner in a restaurant full of all these guys who looked like bankers or brokers. They didn’t recognize me, but they recognized Pierce. And he said, ‘Notice those people looking over?’ I’m sitting there getting more and more self-conscious, even though I didn’t realize they weren’t looking at me. Suddenly, Pierce got up and introduced himself to everybody in the restaurant. At first I was like, ‘What are you doing? You’re like completely insane.’ But it worked. Everybody just relaxed and stopped staring and you could tell they were going to go home and say, ‘Pierce is such a nice guy.’”

No problem with being compared to James Dean.
“I think he was like the most influential person for young guys, especially actors, in the last 50 years. So yeah, I mean, I’m not ashamed to say I am very much influenced by him.”

Facing up to the pressure of the box office.
“It’s like a kind of a monster thing. The more people think they know you, the more you’re identified with a certain kind of role. People always used to ask me about typecasting and I never had to really worry about it. You think people will judge you by your work. But the truth is, it’s about whether the film you’re in makes money or not. And if it’s not making money, they’re like, ‘Oh, he’s over.’”

His ultimate goal.
“You keep trying to make your name stand for something other than just like meaningless celebrity. It’s a difficult battle, but I think people like Johnny Depp have done that. He’s not judged by his public image, it’s just his acting that counts. To get to that place takes a lot of discipline and a lot of hiding.”

There’s no mistaking Tyler Hawkins for Edward Cullen.

Tyler — the young romantic ‘Twilight’ heartthrob Robert Pattinson portrays in the new drama ‘Remember Me’ — is still brooding, but more in a Holden Caulfield, disenfranchised upper-crest New Yorker sort of way (rather than, you know, troubled by the anxieties of blood-lust and immortality).

Pattinson and co-stars Pierce Brosnan, Emilie de Ravin and Chris Cooper, plus director Allen Coulter and screenwriter Will Fetters, hit New York recently to talk about the Manhattan-set drama. And since, well, we had a feeling the masses of R.Patz fans might be just a little bit enthused to have their existence officially acknowledged by the actor, we opened up the floor for fan-submitted questions.

The gracious Pattinson played along, answering questions about whether or not he’d ever consider playing James Bond (“I don’t know if I’d be capable of it, I think you need to be pretty fit for that”), the awkwardness of love scenes, his acting inspirations (“Joaquin Phoenix, Ryan Gosling”) and what he could never give up (“Beer”).

Fans will be pleased to hear that “Twilight: New Moon” costumes are now on display at the Hollywood Museum.

I serve as guest curator every year to organize this exhibition titled “And the Winner Is …,” which celebrates all films up for kudos throughout the award season. We even feature items from such popular films as “Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen,” “Twilight: New Moon” (yes, yes, we have a Taylor Lautner costume in addition ones worn by Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart) and Miley Cyrus’ concert film.

A Robert Pattinson wax figure will be unveiled on March 25th at Madame Tussauds London and Madame Tussauds New York and fans can now view the first photos of the clay mold below. Madame Tussauds New York today released photos of a clay head mold of Hollywood heartthrob Robert Pattinson (or R-Pattz, as his loyal legion of admirers call him). The famed Times Square wax attraction also announced that Pattinson’s completed figure will be unveiled on March 25, 2010, and that R-Pattz’s biggest fans will be invited to be part of the debut event.

The clay head mold represents a crucial step in the up to six month-long figure creation process. A team of studio artists at Madame Tussauds have been studying hundreds of photos and pouring through hours of video to ensure that they capture R-Pattz’s trademark sultry expression and inimitable style. The artists are also working double-time to create not one, but two wax likenesses of Pattinson – one for Madame Tussauds New York and one for Madame Tussauds London.

“Since the release of Twilight, we have been inundated with requests for a figure of Robert Pattinson and are thrilled that in just a few weeks, his figure will officially be part of Madame Tussauds New York. It comes at the perfect time with his next film, Remember Me, expected to light up the box office throughout the month of March,” said Janine DiGioacchino, General Manager of Madame Tussauds New York and Washington D.C.

When Pattinson’s figure is unveiled on March 25, the Twilight star will join the likes of Hollywood leading men Brad Pitt, Leonardo DiCaprio, Daniel Craig, Johnny Depp, George Clooney, Will Smith and Sean “Diddy” Combs – all of whom have been immortalized in wax by Madame Tussauds New York. Visitors will be able to cozy up with Pattinson’s figure for a photo or even a hug.

Between Twilight films, gorgeous, hot actor Robert Pattinson tries to take on other roles that challenge him. No matter what the story is, he likes to play “intense” characters!

Now, in New York, Rob is telling us that his character Tyler, in the new romantic drama Remember Me, a volatile NYU student trying to cope with a family loss and reaching out to the daughter of the man responsible reflected his own need to grow up and mature. He admits he was “a bit of an idiot” when younger and his “actorly” swagger tended to make people want to beat him up! Robert confides that he’s known a lot of troubled teens in his life and really seems to “get” it.

Rob’s leading lady, “Lost’s” Emilie de Ravin was very impressed with him saying that he brought “all these intricate details” to the role. She thought, “how do you come up with these things?” One of those “things” was literally beating himself up in frustration on camera.. but the moment was cut from the film.

Rob says he was thrilled to be out of his pale vampire make-up for a while but admits that all the crowds gathering in New York to see him shoot “drove me insane” for a while until he learned to just mentally block them out in order to focus on his character. When asked if he is worried about continually playing brooding, worried young men, he just kids that ‘maybe I am brooding and wounded’.

TeenHollywood: Was it refreshing to be in a film where you didn’t have to bite someone?

Rob Pattinson: Oh, I’ve bit people in this (laughs). No I didn’t. It’s different. I feel like I’m missing out on something. It’s nice. It’s kind of a relief especially not having all the make-up on. That was one of the main things.

TeenHollywood: What attracted you to the role of Tyler in this film?

Rob: I read it after the first Twilight film and I always kind of liked it. It was always in the back of my mind and the opportunity came up in between the second and third ones; only a small period of time so you can only do a certain type of movie. I was trying to remember all the little things that I’d read and that was kind of perfect.

It didn’t need any real prep time or anything and there was something different about it. It didn’t fit into a typical teen movie type of thing. I hadn’t really read a script like it and it seemed quite realistic and I found the character to be very accessible for me. I’d always really connected to it and I don’t really know why (laughs).

TeenHollywood: The character has anger issues and is tormented and has issues with his parents. Do you have any of these issues in your own life?

Rob: (laughs) Not really. But, at the same time, I connected especially to who they cast for the family around Tyler. I knew a lot of kids who were troubled teenagers and you meet their families and they’re all just saying ‘I don’t know what his problem is’. All of the families seem really nice and supportive around them and it’s this unknown.

You have this energy and you don’t know where to place it. I think the reason he has a problem with his father and not his mother is he knows his mother is not strong enough to take it. If he suddenly started attacking her, she’d just break and Charles, his father, is still a fighter so he’s always going to fight against him. But, I don’t think I have any particular problems myself in that respect.

TeenHollywood: The relationship between you and your little sister in the film, played by Ruby Jerins, seemed very natural. Can you talk about working with her and forging that relationship?

Rob: Yeah. She was amazing. Right from the first day, she was kind of completely at ease with me. I remember sitting around with Alan and Emilie and Ruby and we’re all talking about relationships and I asked her just to be kind of nice, ‘what do you think (your character) Caroline would think?’ And she said ‘well’ and went off on this whole diatribe about her character’s whole backstory and stuff and I thought ‘oh, okay. I won’t patronize you anymore at all’ (he laughs). But, she’s an amazing improviser as well and just seemed so completely at ease. She didn’t seem like an ‘actory’ kid either so I loved it. Anytime I was working with her, you just knew you didn’t have to worry about anything. I’d just kind of look at her and it was always interesting what she did.

TeenHollywood: You play an NYU student and the apartment and other locales seem very real. What did being in the actual places do for you performance-wise?

Rob: I always felt, if this is a typical NYU student’s apartment then (wow!) He’s living in the East Village in this really nice apartment, just a little bit messy, I always thought that was a little bit much. It looked like a million dollar apartment (to me).

But it did help. Before I went to New York, I thought it was going to be really easy and I could just hang out there and pick up on a lot of New Yorker’s mannerisms but it ended up being a more kind of circus than I thought it was going to be (laughs). But, yeah, it definitely was (helpful).

(It was helpful) especially shooting at NYU. I knew quite a few people who went there as well so that was easier and I think the script helped as well because you always see college movies and there is always like beer pong which is like ‘this can’t be real’. Maybe it is. I have no idea (laughing).

TeenHollywood: Was it hard to get in character with all the (fan) craziness around you in New York while filming?

Rob: Kind of. At the beginning it was. Then about halfway through, I just suddenly had an epiphany about it. I don’t know what happened, but it’s just learning to block things out. But at the beginning it was just driving me insane especially for a character who is lost and supposed to be looking for things all the time and you can’t look up because suddenly all the (camera) shutters accelerate and you can’t smile or behave normally but you’ve just got to be more disciplined about it.

TeenHollywood: What do you think if people say you remind them of classic Hollywood icon James Dean?

Rob: I don’t think that’s a bad thing. Do you? I mean that would be great. I don’t know if they will but I think James Dean was one of the most influential people on young guys, especially actors, definitely in the last fifty years I’m not ashamed to say, ‘yeah, I am very much influenced by him’.

TeenHollywood: This character does bear a few similarities to Edward Cullen. I wonder are you worried about being typecast as the brooding, wounded hero?

Rob: Maybe I just am brooding and wounded. I’m just realizing that. Nah, I’m not. You just take little steps. I’m always aware of how people are going to view things so you’ve kind of got to go halfway. If I did something playing a 400-pound woman people are probably going to judge it more harshly than other people who have been doing character parts for twenty years. Not in a calculated way but all of the projects I’m doing seem like little baby steps toward other things. The thing I’m doing now (Bel Ami) is completely different in some ways but, at the same time, it’s got a lot of intensity. It’s what I like in characters.

TeenHollywood: Do people judge your work differently after the Twilight films?

Rob: Yeah, I think people do judge things differently after the Twilight films. They view it differently but I mean there’s nothing you can really do about that. I do take that into account more now than I used to. Doing the Dali thing (Little Ashes), when I was doing it, I didn’t think anyone was ever going to see it. It’s a very different place to be at when you think you’re making a movie which nobody is going to see; you’re not afraid to experiment with things.

TeenHollywood: Do you feel that you were able to bring your all to this role in Remember Me?

Rob: I don’t know. I don’t know what my ‘all’ is. I always felt very connected to it right from the beginning when I first read the script.

TeenHollywood: How so? We’re dealing with random violence in this film. Was there something from your own past that you could bring?

Rob: No. It was more about the reactions after (the random violence). The way he dealt with random events. Little bits were cut out of it but I remember after the first fight with Chris Cooper’s character, his mother was saying ‘you need to sue the police force’ and I was like ‘for what?’ He doesn’t really care. ‘Well, at least, get an apology’ and I was like ‘I don’t think you can sue the police force for an apology’.

It was kind of this blasé attitude, even when it’s been him who’s been the one who is harmed. I always related to that. Looking back into the past and bearing grudges, I don’t really do that. The way that his violence comes out as well, it’s illogical. It’s not against really legitimate targets. I kind of relate to that. When you have a spasm of rage it goes, almost inevitably, to the complete wrong target and it causes you more problems. So, it’s better to keep it chained up all the time.

TeenHollywood: A lot of that anger goes against the dad character played by Pierce Brosnan. What was it like acting with him? And is your relationship wit your own dad, anything like that?

Rob: (laughs) I think my relationship with my dad is the opposite. With Pierce, the part was written as much more controlling. He was incredibly arrogant in the script. And, Pierce seems like a really nice guy and he read the character as ‘he’s not a horrible man. He’s not a monster’ and that completely changed what Tyler’s relationship is with him. You’re looking at a guy where you know the audience is going to be thinking ‘he’s all right’ which is kind of interesting.

This guy Tyler is rebelling against nothing. You’re only attacking because you know he can be attacked and he’s going to keep standing afterwards but Pierce was great. I had no idea who they weren’t going to cast in that part and when (they told me) I was like ‘that’s a tough act to follow’. But I think he was kind of perfect for it.

TeenHollywood: Did you enjoy your fight scenes; acting with fists not words?

Rob: Yeah. I loved it. It’s completely different. I never do stuff like that in reality so it’s quite like cathartic in a lot of ways.

TeenHollywood: Was it daunting working with Chris Cooper as Emilie’s character’s tough dad?

Rob: Yeah, I don’t know how I’d feel if I really had any fighting back to do. I was continually beaten up by him (laughs). But, yeah, it was quite daunting. It’s very hard being strangled. It’s really difficult to look like it’s actually happening because he was kind of doing it as well. If you’re just being strangled nothing really happens. You just kind of stand there. I was experimenting with myself just before we shot it. I don’t really know what the face is to represent being strangled.

TeenHollywood: Have you been in a fight before?

Rob: Well, I’ve been beaten up a few times. I was a bit of an idiot when I was younger. Always unprovoked, in my eyes anyway. It was just after I first started acting and I liked to behave like an actor and that generally provoked a lot of people into hitting me.

TeenHollywood: Were you hurt in that particular fight scene?

Rob: Oh no, not at all. The only thing that I hurt myself on was a bit they cut out of the movie where I kind of flipped out afterwards out of my own impotence in this fight. You walk into the big confrontation and end up getting completely destroyed by your competitor. I was hitting myself afterwards in a little spur of the moment thing which they cut out of the movie. I hit myself so hard, I was in so much pain for the rest of the shoot. It was the most stupid thing I’ve ever done (laughs).

TeenHollywood: When you go crazy in the school room it’s pretty intense too. The young actress opposite you looks scared.

Rob: There was one take of that they had to cut out because it looked like I’d not only be charged with vandalism but in jail for child abuse because I spun that desk around and it fell over and she just ran away out of the classroom (laughs) and I’m supposed to continue on with the scene and I’m like ‘oh my God, I’m actually going to get arrested for this’. It was great. She looked absolutely terrified afterwards which was quite fun.

TeenHollywood: Did you have any trouble with the New York Bronx accent?

Rob: I grew up watching American movies. I learned how to act, to whatever extent, by watching American movies way more than English ones so I kind of, in a lot of ways, feel more comfortable speaking in an American accent. It feels more real to me in a lot of ways.

TeenHollywood: In the Twilight saga you are working with a lot of younger actors. Other than Emilie, the actors in this film are a bit older. Is it different working with older actors?

Rob: Yeah. In a lot of ways, it’s different because when you’re working with young people it’s like you’re going on the journey together. Everything is fresh to you. Whereas if you’re working with experienced people, they’re much clearer about what they want to do or bring to the job right from the beginning which is really good in some ways. But, at the same time, they’re very willing. Chris and I were rewriting the scene when we fought each other during the lunch break just before. I never worked with anyone who is really tied down to what they want to do and that’s that. It’s really good either way.
