Kathy Rich of CinemaBlend.com sat down with Remember Me director Allen Coulter just before the film opened. Check out a segment of the interview below.

Allen Coulter admits he’s not exactly a young man anymore– he’s a Hollywood veteran with TV directing credits stretching back to the 80s, and the 2006 drama Hollywoodland to his name. But when he got the script called Memoirs, about a young man’s intense first romance with a working-class girl in New York CIty, Coulter saw the opportunity to tell the kind of love story you don’t see anymore, one that really captures the nature of all-consuming first love.

The result is now titled Remember Me, starring Robert Pattinson as the angsty young man and Emilie de Ravin as the girl he starts dating, at first, to get revenge on a cop who arrested him. I talked to Coulter recently about his inspiration for taking on the film, what he saw in Robert Pattinson well before Twilight mania, and the one time he snapped at the paparazzi while filming on the streets of New York. You helped Will develop the script. What was it like when you first saw it?
It was a little different, but not a lot. It changed in a lot of subtle ways, and became more subtle. I was really intrigued by the idea of making a movie about young love, particularly in New York. I haven’t seen a lot of good movies over the years that I think are truthful about what it’s like to fall in love at that age.

Was there anything in particular that you wanted to add to it?
Yes. Accuracy about New York City, because he’s not from New York. The other was just deepening the characters, and making them more subtle. And [Rachel Getting Married screenwriter] Jenny Lumet came in. She added another layer of complexity to the characters, to make it feel even more rich and complicated and layered and unresolved, all those things that movies aren’t supposed to do.

It’s definitely a young man’s story, and you at least don’t appear to be 22. What appealed to you about revisiting that time?
Just that– revisiting that time. You have to go back to something like Splendor in the Grass [to find that] very accurate depiction of a certain kind of intensity at that age, and I wanted to do that. I remember that very intensely. Everything at that age, no one’s been in love like you have. No one has felt what you are feeling. You are at the center of the world.

Both of the main characters are dealing with their own tragedy, and one is depicted onscreen and one isn’t. How did you decide to do it that way?
It just evolved that way. The girl being present when [the tragedy with her mother] happens was not in the original script. That was actually Jenny’s idea. In some way the film begins and ends with her. Her survival, if you will, tells us something about the main theme of the movie, the way one’s life can be knocked out of its trajectory by an unexpected event. In regard to the brother and what we learn about Tyler’s brother, it was just one of those mysteries. You don’t want to say everything up front. One event happens upfront, and the other is something that unfolds.

Twilight is part of this movie even if you didn’t intend it, in the way it brings attention to the movie and just the fact that Summit is releasing it. How has that worked for you?
When we cast him Twilight wasn’t out, and I didn’t know who he was. That was an advantage, because I cast him just because I liked him. We hope people will go to this movie who might not have pursued it otherwise. If he wasn’t this phenom, you wouldn’t automatically assume that tens of thousands of teenage girls would show up the first day. We hope that is the case. But this is a movie I made for adults.

When did you realize you had the biggest star in the world in your movie?
Certainly the first day, when we had the thousands of girls standing outside from dawn until dusk. We realized what we were in for. It was not easy, believe me.

Clint Morris of Moviehole posted a few comments regarding Remember Me:

Saw “Twilight” heartthrob Robert Pattinson’s new movie, “Remember Me” yesterday. Didn’t quite know what to expect – though the apt support cast (Pierce Brosnan and Chris Cooper in particular), and Allen Coulter’s (“Hollywood”) anointment as director, indicated that it might be something less mush and more meat. And that’s exactly what it was. It’s Pattinson riding in Coach, as opposed to First Class (the smooth, trouble-free ride that offers a prettier, but not always stunning, view), and you know what? I think he proves his worth here. He’s actually pretty bloody good. And nothing against the film adaptations of the Nicholas Sparks’ novels (in fact, I’ve enjoyed every one of those bar “NIghts in Rodanthe”, which sucked worse than a toothy hooker in a butcher’s strike) but I sure as hell believed the romance at the center of this pic – between Pattinson and co-star Emilie de Ravin (“Lost”) – a lot more than the slightly manipulative passionate plays of say, “The Notebook” or “Dear John”, “Remember Me” just plays a lot realer. I’ll review the flick down the track, but for the moment, let me just say I’m truly convinced at least one of the “Twilight” ‘hunks’ (that’s what you gals call ‘em, right?) has some legitimate acting ability

Remember Me’s Emilie de Ravin sat down to answer some questions from the fans about the film and her character, Ally Craig:

You’ve had a very diverse career from doing Lost on TV to movies, and in the roles you’ve played. What motivates and inspires you to take on a character or project?

I suppose what motivates and inspires me is a role/project that challenges me in a new and different way. There’s also that instant connection with a character I feel when I read a script and would die to play her…hard to verbalize but it’s just a feeling I get when I read something I love.

What does “Remember Me” have that makes it different from common romantic stories?
- John Sikovaris

The characters are so beautifully unique and their relationships break the norm. It’s a reality driven piece that depicts so many parts of a relationship. Not just Ally and Tyler’s but their relationship with their families and in turn, how that effects them.

What was it like to work with co-star Robert Pattinson? Did you spend time getting to know each other before filming or during to create chemistry?
- Lauren Spratt

We had a really great time working together. Instead of just doing a scene and reading your lines, it felt like I was just reacting to him and the situation which made it feel very natural and un-forced. Probably the case because not only did we get along really well- we made a point of being on the same page as each other to do with our characters’ relationship. Not reading over and over scenes, but more talking about them and our characters and finding moments one or both of us hadn’t noticed before. I think really getting to know someone helps a lot with having believable chemistry on-screen.

Other than the Ally/Tyler relationship, which do you think is the best relationship in the film and why?
- Natalia Al

Ruby and Rob who play Caroline and Tyler-They had such a great chemistry together. Even though there’s a big age difference between the characters they have such an adult relationship. Tyler could not be more caring and protective of Caroline and goes to great lengths to try and make her father understand and be there for her.

Ally is such a strong yet sweet character. Was it difficult to balance those qualities in your portrayal?
- “Deserae Torrez

It was in a way, although Ally and I have some similar traits it’s more challenging to not just play a version of yourself, but rather use those similar characteristics and develop a totally new character.

Daily Beast features Remember Me

The Daily Beast recently featured Remember Me as one of the Spring’s 25 Hottest films:

Remember Me marks Robert Pattinson’s first wide-release big screen turn since he became “OH MY GOD EDWARD CULLEN!!!” in 2008’s Twilight. Which is to say, if you want to see this movie opening weekend, we suggest you wait until the Clearasil crowd has cleared out and catch a later showing, unless you want all of Pattinson’s words drowned out by squeals. In the movie, he plays a troubled young man who butts heads with his father (Pierce Brosnan) and falls for an equally troubled young woman (Lost’s Emilie de Ravin). (March 12)
