PattyCast // The Ultimate Robert Pattinson Podcast
Episode 005 "Man Candy"
Isabel: Hello and welcome to this week’s Pattycast. I’m Isabel.
Joy: I’m Joy.
Tara: And I’m Tara.
Isabel: Okay, why don’t we hop into the news straight away? Let’s talk about Little Ashes and the three new clips. Did you guy watch them?
Joy and Tara: Yes.
Isabel: What did you guys think? I mean, I don’t have anything to say other than this movie looks so interesting and just so different . I dunno. It looks really interesting.
Joy: It looks really artistic.
Tara: I really like the first clip, the one where we see Dali painting and Lorca writing his story. I don’t know there was just so much--even though nothing was being spoken in that scene, I don’t know. It just--just the way they were acting, it just spoke volumes to me. I was just like, “Wow.”
Joy: That was exactly my thought. I was just like, “They haven’t even said anything and I’m staring with my mouth open.” I was just like, this is so powerful. And like this one little scene you can really feel the emotion and like, that’s it. I mean, there’s no words, he hardly moves, but it’s all in his expression. I was really impressed.
Isabel: I was really impressed too because--
Joy: I was really impressed.
Isabel: You could feel the emotion, whatever it is, that was there, it was powerful, you could tell.
Joy: exactly.
Isabel: It just intrigued me more and I think that was the clip that I remembered the most. I don’t know…I think I wanna see more of that sort of thing in the upcoming trailer. What do you guys think?
Tara: Oh, yeah..
Joy: Oh, definitely. I’d like to see the trailer really go with the artistic approach, and I’m sure it will, but like you said, I’d like to see more of that kind of, what’s the word? Maybe “silent suffering?” You know, just the kind of connection rather than the dialogue because even the dialogue that we did here sounded good in the original clip that first came out I think it was on E! News or Entertainment Tonight--
Isabel: It was a couple weeks ago.
Joy: It was a couple weeks ago, yeah it was just a tiny snippet of dialogue but it sounded really good. Like, it flowed really naturally, and even among the other actors--because we didn’t hear Rob speak in the newest clips--it seemed to flow really well. And I think, just, it kind of gave me a good feel about the movie. Just in those few clips it made me more excited to see it.
Isabel: Yeah I just wanna say I’m continuously amazed by his performances in completely different movies. Sometimes, I feel like we’re watching a completely different person, and it’s kind of creepy sometimes how he totally becomes the character and it’s a completely--it’s convincing. It’s not like you’re just watching Robert Pattinson act, you’re watching an actual--you feel like it‘s the character.
Tara: Right, he had the ability to really bring them to life. I mean, when you’re watching him on screen, like you said, he no longer is Rob, he really is Dali, he really is Edward Cullen. You look on screen and you’re like, “Oh my god!” Well, it’s just him being himself.
Isabel: Yeah. It’s--I think you can see it more so than you can see it in Twilight but we’ll talk more about that later but I think you can see his acting potential so much more in movies like Little Ashes.
Joy: We’ve said it before, he really is a chameleon when he acts.
Isabel: Yeah.
Joy: And that’s a really--that’s a real talent because not a lot of actors can do that. And I’d hate to call him a character actor because usually when we say that, that brings to mind like people who have little bit roles and just do like, weird parts--
Isabel: --Yeah, and the same people--
Joy: --But I think in a way, he is. You know? Well, yeah, exactly. But I think in the sense of being a character actor, I think it’s that he gets into the character and like you said, he becomes the character, that he’s not Rob anymore, and I think we’ve seen that in his approach to acting, you know? We’ve seen how involved he gets in his roles.
Isabel: He throws himself into it.
Joy: Yeah.
Isabel: It’s like how he--well, he doesn’t even prepare that much, it seems. Like his method isn’t even to study something whole-heartedly. His method is just to think about it and throw himself into it and it always seems to come off as being so natural.
Joy: Yeah, well and he works so hard to know the characters, and then he just does it. He becomes the character, and like you said, he doesn’t have to spend hours between takes getting into focus because he’s done all the pre--what’s the word? He’s done all the preparation, you know? And then when it comes time to actually do the acting, he’s ready. So, I just think it’s really impressive, and of course not all actors work like that but it’s good to see that he really is dedicated to the craft of acting and he’s not just riding on the wave of fame. He really enjoys it.
Isabel: Well, it’s also really, I was gonna say, really dedicated, it seems, to getting the actual character right. Like, he asks when he talks about the characters, it seems like he asks pretty specific questions of the authors, or whoever it is that he was talking to about the character. And he really tries to get into their mindset.
Joy: Well, there’s an article from MTV where they were talking about his films, and little Ashes among them, and it’s got a really good quote from Rob, that kind of goes along with what we’ve been saying about how he really learns the characters. And so this is the quote, he says:
“There’s tons and tons of letters. There’s a book of letters between Lorca and Dali where they make obvious reference to their relationship which is more than just a friendship. It’s a very complicated script and before anyone would see it, I recommend you read a biography of Dali, otherwise you won’t get too much out of it.”
I think that’s really neat. I think that whole quote shows that he really did the work, you know? And he--
Isabel: --Well he did the research and he really knows the character and I think that it’s interesting that he’s telling people that they need to know who Dali is before they come and see the movie. That’s pretty unique.
Tara: Yeah
Joy: Mhm.
This is a spoiler warning: the following discussion will be about Twilight, so if you haven’t seen the movie and don’t want to be spoiled, skip ahead in the pod cast to the 23:33 time stamp where we will continue on with the spoiler-free discussions.
Isabel: Okay, well this week’s big story is twilight of course, it came out in the U.S. and Canada , and other places too, right? Thailand it came out.
Tara: Yes, sure enough, it did?
Isabel: What other places? Everywhere. I don’t think--not everywhere.
Tara: Almost everywhere.
Isabel: Almost everywhere it came out. This week, so we’re gonna mostly talk in this Podcast about what our reviews are, what we thought, Joy, you don’t wanna go first, do you?
Joy: No, I don’t wanna go first.
[Laughter]
Joy: I will dominate the conversation. You guys go first.
Isabel: Okay, I’ll go first. Along with millions of other people, I saw twilight this week. I saw it on the twentieth, and I didn’t hate the movie. Actually, there are certain parts of the movie that I really enjoyed. But as a whole, the things I had problems with were the CGI effects, I didn’t think they were any good, really. We’ll talk more specifically, I guess, later, after we go over our more general interpretations of what we did like or didn’t like, or whatever, but I really enjoyed the acting in this movie. I didn’t really have high hopes about the acting ‘cause the story seemed pretty clear-cut or whatever, but I was pleasantly surprised by Kristen Stewart. I became such a huge fan when I left the theater. And as for Rob, I was completely blown away by how accurate his accent was. Even my friend said the same thing, that they were trying to catch him slip up and they said that it’s one of the best American accents that they’ve heard a British person do, and I thought that some of the dialogue was pretty wooden in some parts, but on the whole I liked the story and I liked the acting, CGI was okay, and I can go more specific later but, you guys go ahead.
Tara: I was really, really impressed with Rob. His acting was really impeccable. He totally has grown as an actor, I mean, the three of us have been, you know, following him since basically the conception of his career. So, to watch him go to ring of the Nib lungs to now, he’s grown so much and I Was just really wowed over and over again in the theater, and, you know, when Edward was in pain, you felt and saw that pain in his face and he made you--there were some times that I had guttural belly laughs from him. Just the way he came out with things and the audience that was watching Twilight along with me, they were pretty harsh and he got a couple of laughs outta them and I think he pretty much wowed them over, too. So yeah, he was just incredibly spot-on and everybody else was really fantastic, too. Kristen Stewart, the first time she was cast as Bella, I was like, “Oh God,” you know? I didn’t really know how I felt about it.
Isabel: Yeah, I was the same way.
Tara: You know I was like, “I really don’t know how I feel, she’s a good actress but she wasn’t the Bella I had in my head.” and she was amazing.
Isabel: She was so great. She blew me away, too. To be honest, I was more surprised by her than I was by Rob, like, we all know he’s a good actor, that’s why we’re here, but she totally blew me away and I wasn’t expecting that at all.
Tara: Oh yeah, and I think the entire Cullen family, I loved them. I think that it was so funny ‘cause when they had cast all of them I was like, “Oh my God! What are they doing to this book?” Aside from Rob. And everybody was just like really great, I thought. I thought Nikki Reed was a really powerful Rosalie; when she looked at Bella she sent daggers. I mean, her facial expressions were just like, it sent shivers down MY spine, so I thought she was really great. And yeah, I liked it, and again, with Isabel, the CGI effects were kinda less-than-stellar. But I knew going into it that it was kinda low budget and a couple of the scene transitions were a little rough around the edges. But other than that, I thought I wasn’t going to like it as much as I did, so that’s good. It’s got a thumbs up from me.
Isabel: Awesome, awesome. Okay, Joy. General impressions before we go specific. Remember, general.
Joy: General, oh you’re torturing me! Okay, well I have seen it twice in the past two days, and of course we had to wait an extra week. It didn’t come out here until Thursday. I went with a whole group of people. The people that I’ve converted to the fandom and other people even, who hadn’t read the books but wanted to see the movie. So there were probably about ten or fifteen of us who went together and every single one of us loved it. Absolutely loved it. ‘Cause there were those of us who were like, really hardcore fans, there were about two or three of us who were like total dedicated, you know? And there’s some who were just like, “Oh yeah, I liked the books,” and then there were some who were really like, had no clue about the books at all and didn’t know what it was gonna be about. And all of us just loved it. I mean, from my point of view, gosh--we’ve been waiting for this movie for a year, since we found out that Rob was cast, and I’m always a little bit nervous going to a movie that I’ve so built up in my mind. I try not to. I try not to build it but this is like a really big deal. So I was nervous going in, like trying not to get my hopes up, but to tell you the truth, there was not a single thing that I was disappointed about. I mean, there were, like you said, the CGI effects, they were crap. But I knew they were gonna be crap and so I was just like, “Ha ha,” you know? It just kind of made me laugh. And I agree with Tara about some of the transitions were a little bit awkward. But even still, it didn’t bother me. Really I just felt like everyone did an exceptional job. Like you said the acting was wonderful. It was wonderful. I wasn’t sure what to expect with the acting, you know because to tell you the truth. Twilight is kind of cheesy, and I think that’s why I love it. ‘Cause you know, the dialog in the book flows really well but on-screen it could easily be like, cheesy and super sappy but it didn’t end up being like that and I think that was a lot--ninety percent due to Rob and Kristen. They did an amazing job.
Isabel: No, I really agree with you, I think that Twilight’s full of cheese and they made it humorous, not cheesy, and I really appreciate that about the movie. ‘Cause the books aren’t very funny but I thought there were so many funny parts in the movie and I really liked that.
Joy: yeah, I felt like they pulled that off really well, especially as a book-to-movie translation. I think they did an incredible job. And of curse, there were things that were different and I expected that but like I said, nothing disappointed me. I was not disappointed. I thought they did a great job. As someone who has read the book at least twenty times, at least, I mean that’s an underestimate. I don’t like, during the whole movie I didn’t once think, “Oh, they forgot that part!” or, “Why did they do it like that?” I didn’t do that at all. The whole time I was so engaged, so happy to be seeing this book on screen being put into pictures that matched up with the book. And even the little things that they changed I was like, “No, that’s good, it works for the movie.” And like I said I was really pleased with the film.
Isabel: Wow, Joy. You are a true Twilight fan. I commend you. I commend you
[Laughter]
Let’s talk about specific thoughts on Rob’s performance. I think we’ve already said everything that we need to say but I just wanted to I guess, wrap it up or summarize it or whatever, and I was surprised. I thought that it was gonna be this like, flat and stupid and overly romantic and cheesy and dumb, and it was funny and he was great and his accent was fantastic and my--I went with some friends and one was a guy, well two guys and two girls, and they, the guys left the theater kind of dazzled by Rob. It was really, really funny and I kinda got a kick out of it because both of them were like, “Oh yeah, he’s definitely good looking, that one,” and--
Joy: Cuuuute.
Isabel: --Yeah but they were blown away like,, they thought like, you know, “Rob, whatever he’s probably some stupid actor, he’s good-looking, whatever.” But they enjoyed his acting as well as his good looks, apparently. So, I don’t know if that’s--I think that’s pretty good when you get guys to go to Twilight first of all, and then enjoy watching it. That’s pretty good.
Tara: I totally am in agreement with you. I think--really I can’t, if you ask me to pick on one thing that he did wrong, I can’t, because he was perfect, he really was, and I’m not just saying that because I’m a fan, really, I thought he was amazing. It was funny because some people were picking out things like, “Oh my gosh! Did you see that happen in the background?” But I was like, “No, I didn’t, I was looking at him.” And I was watching everything that he was doing ‘cause I was just so impressed. So, everything from the accent to his facial expression, to--everything, it just blew me away and yeah, he has me speechless.
Isabel: The facial expressions--
Joy: His facial expressions are priceless.
Isabel: are priceless. I am so tempted to just wait till we can screen half the movie and just do something on his facial expressions. They were amazing.
Joy: He’s so expressive, and it’s so funny to watch. Not that I’m saying that he’s--oh I don’t know. But it is really funny just to see his facial expression ‘cause I’m--there are parts of it where I’m just like, “OH that’s Rob, that’s a Rob face.”
Isabel: Yeah, totally.
Joy: One of my favorite scenes was where he drives Bella to school for the first time, and he gets out of the car and he’s like, totally pleased with himself, you can tell. And he’s wearing those little sunglasses and he’s just like--
Isabel: Yeah it was fun, it was fun.
Joy: --totally pimping it out. It was hilarious. I loved it. His facial expressions, just that Rob smile that he had on his face, I was like, “That is perfect. That is absolutely perfect.”
Isabel: Actually, I think on e of the reviews talked about how they praised him on how he portrayed Edward because he totally could’ve made it completely Emo and they said something like, he put a little bit of himself in it: a little bit of humor, a little bit of smiles, or whatever, and they said that it made it more enjoyable than if he had stuck to being brooding and being brooding and being all dark the entire time.
Joy: Like he wanted to, he wanted to be all Emo the whole time. In all these interviews he was like, “But Edward’s suicidal!” And all these things that they had to like, make him more cheerful.
I love it. But he pulled it off. He pulled off both sides of Edward really well. Like, the fun, romantic side and the suffering side. I think he got both excellently.
Tara: And he balanced them well.
Joy: yeah, exactly.
Isabel: Well Joy said her favorite scene and I think Tara and I are in agreement when we say our favorite scene was vampire baseball.
Tara: Vampire baseball!
Joy: Vampire baseball, yes! Oh my gosh!
Isabel: Okay part of the reason why I’m a pseudo-fan of the books is because I really love the Cullens. You know, she wrote them as such a fun little family dynamic. It’s not even a family, it’s more of like a community and it was--I think that scene, for me, I thought they didn’t really portray the Cullens much in the movie but that scene kind of was able to put all of that like, togetherness and family and Cullen-ness that we all know and love and put it into that one scene and it was fantastic. I loved it, so much.
Joy: I agree, I was really worried about it because one of my friends told me that she read a review that said they won’t use the phrase, “Jump the shark” anymore, they’ll use the phrase, “The vampires are playing baseball.” And I was like, “No, does that mean that they made it like, really awful and cheesy?” So I was kinda worried about it ‘cause it’s one of my favorite scenes in the book and then when I saw it in the movie I was like, “This is so awesome.” This is one of the scenes where the special effects were actually like really, really good.
Isabel: Yes, yes. I didn’t even notice them ‘cuz I was so enamored with the scene itself and thinking back, they actually were really good. And they looked like they were having fun. They looked like they were outtakes, like they were just playing together for fun. That’s what it looked like.
Joy: It was so cute when Rob and Kellen--what are their names? Sorry. Edward and Emmet. When they jumped up and crashed into each other and then like fell on the ground and were just like giggling, that was so cute!
Isabel: Yeah, that was so cute.
Joy: I love that they put it in there cuz it just showed they’re really having fun. And I don’t know if that was even planned or if they just decided to stick it in there but that was just so cute and fun seeing them being all brotherly and stuff, you know?
Isabel: Well that’s what I mean, like they were showing the family dynamic which I really didn’t get for most of the movie but I’m glad that scene was included. It kind of made up for it. Another part of the movie that I really enjoyed was the placement of Rob’s music. I love the fact that they put his music in the scene where they go to the restaurant is Port Angeles, what do you guys think?
Joy: That was perfect.
Isabel: So perfect..
Tara: I thought the placement of “Never Think” and “Let Me Sign” were appropriate in both scenes that they put it in. I loved the scene in Port Angeles--that was actually one of my other favorite scenes.
Isabel: right, so what do we wanna see--I know that this is far away--but what do we wanna see in the DVD features? I personally kinda wanna see something like they did on “Meet the Champions” where they followed them around on set and sort of like did a little video diary. I had never seen that before in DVD features and I really enjoyed that. And they showed them like hanging out with each other in each others’ trailers. I thought that was fun.
Tara: Yeah, that was cool.
Joy: I definitely wanna see outtakes. I wanna see a blooper reel because that must be hilarious.
Isabel: I wanna see Rob running like a mountain goat.
Joy: Me too!
Laughter
Tara: String cheese!
Isabel: Exactly.
Joy: Well, we know there’s gonna be a bunch of deleted scenes which is gonna be really great. It’ll be neat to see what they cut out because like I said, I didn’t think, “Oh, they forgot that!” or, “Oh they forgot that!” so maybe on like the fifth re-watch I’ll be like, “Oh they forgot something.” But to tell you the truth I’m kind of excited to see what’s gonna be on the DVD because I can’t think of what deleted scenes they might have left out. I don’t know.
Isabel: Well, yeah. I’d like to see the deleted scenes but I’d like to hear the DVD commentary. That must have been fun to do.
Joy: That’s gonna be hilarious. With Rob and Kristen and Catherine.
Isabel: because it’s not scripted so I wanted to know what he has to--what he’s…the crazy things that are gonna come out of his mouth.
Joy: It’s gonna be ridiculous and awesome. I’m excited about it.
Isabel: I wish we had a blooper reel of the DVD commentary. That’s what I want on the DVD feature.
Joy: Yes, exactly! Exactly.
Isabel: So, what should we ask for? All right, any last thoughts about Twilight? Joy?
Joy: I’m just so happy with it, I really am. And all of my friends are like, when can we see it again? Well yesterday--well we went and saw it on Thursday, and Friday school was cancelled because of the political situation here in Bangkok so we were like, like literally we got the text message from the headmaster at like five-thirty in the morning and then we all immediately texted each other and were like, “When are we gonna go see Twilight again?” And so we went. We just hopped in the taxi and went to the theater and we saw it again. I mean, it was, I don’t know, I’m totally pleased with it. Everyone that I went with was just ecstatic.
Isabel: Awesome. Alright, moving on. We’ve got New Moon, it started filming in February, or March, of 2009. How are they gonna deal with the lack of man-candy in this movie?
[Laughter]
Joy: Man candy?
Isabel: Yeah, “man-candy.”
[Again…laughter]
Joy: I really hope that they get some information from Stephenie Meyer and kind o shoot some scenes with Edward in Alaska and tracking and all those things. Even if they’re not like huge scenes but it’d be kind of cool to see like little flashes of what he’s doing. I think it’s totally possible. I mean, obviously Stephanie Meyer knows exactly what he was doing.
Isabel: Well, she was writing a book about it, so I’m pretty sure she knows.
Joy: Exactly, so I think it’d be cool to see that because yeah, like, there is a severe lack of Edward in this book. But there doesn’t have to be in the movie and I think that’s the great things about a movie because the book is told by Bella’s point of view so we only see what she sees. But in the movie you’ve got the omniscient narrator or whatever that is and the director can show whatever that is. We can see back-story and we can see what Edward’s doing while he’s not around Bella and I think that’d be really neat even just to see flashes. Like, it doesn’t even have to be huge scenes--like I’d love--but just kind of keeping him in the viewer’s mind
Isabel: So, this is Rob’s favorite book.
Joy: I think it’ll be neat because it is his favorite book. I think he’s probably gonna get into it more than he already does, you know what I mean? I think we’ll be able to kind of see that in his performance.
Isabel: I really, really wish they’d do some Alaska bits because he--
Joy: Yeah.
Isabel: --We need to see more of what’s going on. Alright let’s leave New Moon behind and talk about interviews. We had a couple of really big interviews this week. There was Tyra and Jay Leno. Let’s talk about Tyra first. She was totally into him. It was so fun to watch.
Joy: Oh my gosh, she was like I was surprised she didn’t just like--
Isabel: --If she could, she would have sat in his lap, I think.
Joy: True story.
Tara: Yeah it was so funny she got all into it, she was like, [in imitation-British-accent] “Oh, Robert, bite me!” and Taylor’s like, “I’ll bite you.” She’s like, “Yeah.”
Isabel: Taylor’s so cute!
Joy: He is so cute. He’s second in my heart.
[Laughter]
Isabel: I just think he’s like someone’s little brother. He’s so cute.
Joy: So, what else do we wanna say about the interview?
Isabel: Just that she was all over him. That was basically the impression that I got. Okay, Jay Leno, that was--I liked the bit where he talks about his car. That was funny.
Tara: Oh yeah, that was funny.
Joy: That was awesome, that was awesome. I liked that interview because we got to see Rob’s sense of humor. Like, we got to hear a lot of Rob’s really dry humor in that interview, which I always love. I love his sarcastic wit because he’s so funny--
Isabel: But half the people don’t understand that he’s joking, which is half the fun of it.
Joy: Oh I know, I know. Rob’s gotta be careful because people will believe anything and he says stuff like this which, you know, most people figure out, “Oh haha, he’s joking. He’s being sarcastic, he’s British,” and then there’s these like--this whole faction of fan girls who are like, “Oh my gosh, Rob is homeless!” You know? Like freaking out, and he’s like, totally kidding. It’s so funny. He’s gonna get in trouble one day. He’s gonna say something sarcastically--
Isabel: --Well we already get e-mails about people asking us things to verify his sarcastic comments because they’re like, “I’m not really sure when Rob’s telling the truth or he’s being serious or not ,so can you tell me if he’s actually serious most of the time?” I mean, how are we supposed to answer those questions, A, and B, he’s obviously being sarcastic.
Joy: Yeah, I love how sarcastic he is, ‘cause I’m totally sarcastic. So, I just love that kind of humor, and Jay Leno was totally with it too, man they were just like [*inaudible] it was so funny.
Tara: My favorite part it was kinda funny he was like, “Oh, yeah, it’s a 1989 BMW,” and he looks at Heidi Klum and he goes, “It’s German.”
Joy: I know! He was so cute trying to talk to her and when he like, mentioned the Ring of the Nibelungs he was like, “It’s German.” I was like, “What?!” It was so cute. I think he was like totally crushing on Heidi Klum. He was like, “Hey, Heidi Klum.” He kept trying to look at her and then when she scooted away from him that was so funny. He was like, “I haven’t showered in a month,” or something like that and she was--
Isabel: She was horrified.
Joy: Yeah. No personal hygiene. Oh, that was so funny. I really loved that interview. I just though--I mean Jay leno always does great interviews; he really knows how to bring out the best in celebrities, I think. And this was no exception. I like seeing Rob like casual and just having fun, you know? Instead of answering all the same stupid questions. But even like, when Heidi asked about his hair. It wasn’t like, “Oh my gosh, your hair!” She was like, “Why is it so dirty?” It was really funny.
Tara: Yeah it was so funny ‘cause also she was like, “Oh it’s so nice to see your face under that mop of hair!” and he’s like, “Uhhhhh”
Isabel: That’s so funny. He’s so cute. It’s the only reason why I still watch Project Runway. Anyway…
[Laughter]
Isabel: Okay, now that we’ve digressed enough, let’s move into articles and quotes.
Joy: well one of the most recent articles that we’ve gotten was from the Filipino website, enquirer.net and there were some really good quotes from Rob, as usual he always has something funny to say. And he talked a lot about his music. There’s nothing really new but it was a good quote anyway, they asked him about his band, and this is what he said: “I was in a band years ago. Not like a proper band, but I had kind of roll-onn roll-off musicians. I still try and play but it’s weird now since when I’m trying to do it as an actor it seemed kind of cheesy. I liked playing at open mics in bars and stuff because it was the only time I’ve felt free. I did a couple of gigs in LA and people filmed and put them on the internet. It just ruins the whole experience. You’re like, “Oh, that wasn’t the point.” So I stop. I’m going to wait for all this to die down before I start doing live gigs again.”
There was also another interview this week where he talked about how when he gets back to London he’d like to start playing in pubs again but, you know--and we could go on because we’ve talked about this before but if you happen to see Rob playing at a gig in London, don’t scare him and don’t post videos on the internet.
[Laughter]
Isabel: Yeah please don’t record his performances. We’re not going to post them on our site. We’re not gonna link to them. Just enjoy it.
Joy: Just enjoy it. And then tell us about it. That’s also okay. He also talks about what kin of music he listens to, which, if anybody else downloaded the play list that he did for Itunes, he’s got some really fun music, which I always figured he would. I knew he had kind of an eclectic taste, but this is what he says about music: “I don’t’ know much about contemporary music. I do have an iPod but I listen to a lot of old blues. I listen to John Lee Hooker and Elmore James.[?] I’ve been listening to them for years. I was obsessed with Van Morrison for years; I went to see him recently where he performed Astral Weeks. I just spent the entire night crying, but I was really obsessed with Van Morrison.”
I thought that was really cute that he admitted that he went to the concert and cried.
Isabel: That’s so funny.
Tara: I kinda think it’s really cool that he likes old blues songs and artists that are not, you know--he doesn’t have a very contemporary taste. I like that about him. It just shows how deep he is, you know? And there are a couple of choices on his play list on iTunes that were really fantastic like the Tom Waits song, that’s just like really brilliant, I don’t know. I think that--I like that about him.
Joy: he also had a really funny quote where the question was, “What is your home life like?” and he said: “In LA, it basically consists of waiting for my phone to ring, reading scripts, and that’s about it. In London, I could replace scripts for books and I just watch a lot of movies. I have very few hobbies.”
I think that’s totally perfect. II always pegged him as kind of a hermit, you know?
Isabel: Yeah, he totally is.
Joy: He just doesn’t do anything--
Isabel: Noooo.
Joy: You know, he has his few little hobbies like reading and acting, of course, but basically he just kind of stays at home and does nothing. I think that’s really funny . The last quote from that article which I really like, was “what concerns you most about this sudden fame?” and he said: “when something or someone is hyped and you’re put on the forefront of a lot of things, people kind of want to tear you down. That’s kind of a scary thing, especially when you’re not really putting yourself out there.”
That is so true because Rob isn’t really putting himself out there, you know? He’s so humble and he doesn’t self-promote and when he does, he’s not like, “Oh, I’m awesome, you know?”
Isabel: And when he does, he usually messes it up. ‘Cause he doesn’t know how to do it.
Joy: True story. But I think it’s true because when you get to be this big, it seems to kind of fall into two camps: you either love him or you hate him. And that must be really scary to be the subject of all of that because obviously we’ve seen the screaming and the--just the obsession with him. But then there’s like that whole set of people who are like, “Oh no, he’s terrible,” and they wanna say all these bad things about him, and the paparazzi are following him. They’re trying to catch him doing all these bad things and it must be really frightening. So it was kind of an interesting quote from him, I think it was really honest.
Isabel: Yeah, I think you’re right, he didn’t say--it’s deep what he says, what’s scary. I don’t know.
Joy: Kind of along that line, in the BuzzSugar interview, the question was talking about twilight, “This is a huge role that you’ve launched into. Do you have any only being seen as Edward forevermore?” basically saying, you know, “are you worried about being typecast?” And that’s a real concern, but this is what Rob said, “I have really thought about it. I’ve been so involved in the whole Twilight thing, I haven’t really had the chance to separate that. I guess I’ll have a very different perspective when the movie comes out. We’ll see what it does. I mean, it’s definitely changed my career a lot. People take me more seriously, I guess in the industry. I’m not particularly worried. Maybe I will be when I haven’t got a job for five years.”
I think it’s true for something that’s so huge--like Twilight, if he does four, five movies, whatever they decide, he’s gonna be seen as “Oh, the guy who plays Edward Cullen.” Just like Dan Radcliffe is, “Oh, Harry Potter.” And he’s been trying to do things to get out of that. And I think Rob is gonna be Edward Cullen. And I don’t think that’s necessarily a bad thing, that Rob is seen as Edward Cullen because it’s a great role, it’s got like, a built-in fandom. But I think that Rob has really taken the initiative with Little Ashes and How to Be and all these Indie films to show, “Hey, I’m not just Edward Cullen. I’m a real actor and I’m good at what I do.” And we’ve seen that before and I think that’s a good thing. So, you know, when he says he’s not particularly worried, I really don’t think he is. I don’t think he’s worried.
Isabel: No, I don’t think he’s worried at all: and I don’t think he should be because he’s taken steps to insure that he isn’t just typecast and his real fans know that he’s got such an acting range that he can’t really be typecast cuz whatever he does, it seems that he can do it. And he’s got such different roles to choose from. He’s not always a Cedric/Edward type.
Tara: No, that’s one of the things that I’ve always admired about him. He always takes on different roles he’s very diverse, you know. He chooses this variety of roles and there are a couple of emails received from our viewers who stated: “I see a lot of Johnny Depp in Rob.” And I can understand that because Johnny Depp, one day he’s in Finding Neverland and the next he’s playing the Demon Barber from Fleet Street and that’s one of the things I love about him is that, you know, he’s not afraid to take on different roles and he’s not afraid of what people are gonna think about him. And Rob is totally like him in that respect. If he feels passionate about a script and it involves him shaving off his hair or changing his look in some way, he’s gonna do it. And that is what’s not gonna typecast him because he’s not afraid to take on different roles.
Joy: Very well said.
Isabel: Alright, that’s all I have for articles and quotes this week. So, we don’t have a Tom Sturridge Reference of the Day and that IS your Tom Sturridge Reference of the Day.
[Laughter]
Isabel: And so if you’re Tom Sturridge, please e-mail us admin.pattisononline@gmail.com. We’d like to hear from you. Alright, onto listener e-mails--
Joy: (Laughing) Now we’re gonna get e-mails from people pretending to be Tom Sturridge.
Isabel: That’ll be fun! Try and convince Isabel that you’re Tom Sturridge, that’s the name of the game.
Joy: (Laughing) Yeah, there you go.
Isabel: I’ll read the best ones next week. Again, that’s admin.pattinsononline@gmail.com. Convince me, Isabel that you are Tom Sturridge.
Joy: that’s awesome.
Isabel: Onto listener e-mails.
Joy: yeah, our first e-mail was from Millie and she wanted to know what we think about the twilight soundtrack. And we talked about it a little bit, what we thought of at least Rob’s songs I mean, you know, we love his music. But I have been listening to the soundtrack on repeat for the last month, or whenever we got it, and it was really fun to actually see it put in place in the movie cuz I thought it was very well placed. Cuz there were a lot of songs where I was like, “Where are they gonna put this?” You know? “How does it fit?” And I was kind of a little worried. I was like, “Are they gonna have awkwardly placed songs?” But it all went together so well, and I really, really enjoyed it. But I loved the soundtrack and I got the score, as well, and it’s just beautiful. Gorgeous.
Isabel: Yeah, I thought it would be. He composes really, really good music.
Joy: Yeah, I’ve enjoyed listening to that. How about you guys?
Isabel: I really like the soundtrack, as well, and I agree that he placed it in the right places in the movie. I enjoyed that.
Tara: I actually really like the soundtrack a lot. There are a few songs that really pop out, like Eyes on Fire, that song is great. And then there was…Footless Bird American Math??? I really enjoyed that one as well. That was, I don’t know, I really liked it. And that at the end of the prom scene, that was just so perfect. I really thought that was great. And I really enjoyed the soundtrack as a whole, even though I really never thought the Muse song, Super Black Hole? That was really fun.
Joy: I really thought that was well placed. And I was like, “Where are they gonna put this?” and then where they did put it was just excellent, so I was very pleased. The next e-mail came from Roanne and she actually had several questions that were really good. Her first question was: “Do you think twilight will be well-received in Rob’s hometown of London?” What do you guys think?
Isabel: I think so. I think there’s already a buzz being created by the movie and we get a ton of people from the UK asking us about the premiere, asking us about the movie, asking us any more information about the release over there, so people are pretty excited about it over there. I think it’ll do well overseas; as well as it did here.
Tara: Yeah, I agree. And that’s their homeboy. They’re gonna be so proud of him.
Isabel: Haha, homeboy. Rpattz is my homeboy. I want a t-shirt that says that.
Joy: We’ll make one
Tara: I can only imagine how proud they are of him and I think he’ll be really well received when he goes home and it’s gonna be a really big hit over there and I can’t wait to see the response. I think December 3rd, we’re gonna send one of our representatives at the premiere. We’re really excited because we’ve heard it’s gonna be smaller than the LA premiere. So, we’re hoping that we get more coverage.
Joy: Well, the next question that Roanne asked was: “Do you think with the release of twilight and the popularity of Rob,, will fame change him?” And don’t think so at all. I think we’re all in agreement with that. He’s not gonna change. If anything, he’ll go in the opposite direction and hide away and we’ll never see him again, I mean, you know? But he’s still Rob and I think he knows who he is and I --
Tara: He’s not willing to change himself for fame. He said he’s not willing to do that so…yeah. He’s not gonna change.
Joy: I think we’re safe. I think Rob will always be Rob and we’ll be happy about that.
Isabel: Yeah, I think we should be more worried about him going away in a few years, more so than changing.
Joy: Well the last question that she asked actually goes really nicely into what we wanted to talk about next.
Isabel: For those of you who’ve not really been following what’s going on with the site, we’ve been having some financial issues. We prefer a host that we can no longer be hosted on shared server space because we’re too big . We ended up crashing the server and the other customers, we--I guess--drag their speed down. So, we need to be hosted on our own private server, which costs exponentially more than shared server space. So, we had a bit of a crisis and we put up a PayPal donation button on the site and we’re completely overwhelmed, and pleasantly surprised, at the response that we’ve received from everyone so far. As of tonight,, we’ve made enough money through your donations to keep us open for another four months, so we--it’s amazing how much money you guys have given to us and to the site to keep the site running. And we can’t really thank you enough because this is--we’ve worked on this site for a really long time and we love everything that we do on it. We love you guys, most of all. Do you guys have anything to say? I’m kind of overwhelmed by how much people love us, really.
Tara; yeah, when Isabel had emailed Joy and myself, I was rendered utterly speechless. I couldn’t imagine that this would happen, I mean, it means so much to us because we’ve put so much into this site, really. Love, sweat, tears, and to know that it’s appreciated by you guys, it means so much to us. And it really brought us to the verge of tears and we can’t thank you enough, we really can’t. Thank you.
Joy: yeah, it was overwhelming. I mean we probably had thirty emails between us just of pure Caps Lock excitement of just the overwhelming response. I mean, I cried, I won’t deny it, I cried. I was just so grateful because we’ve been worried about this for days. I was so overwhelmed by it yesterday, by just the whole problem of, “What are we gonna do?” That I was talking to my friends and I was like, “I don’t even know what to do, we’re gonna have to close, and we’ve been working so hard!” And just to see the response that the fans have given us, it’s just been amazing because we’ve always tried to so hard to do it on our own. We’ve never wanted to be a burden on anyone, you know, least of all the fans. We’ve tried to do everything ourselves, as much as we can.
Isabel: We were very self-sufficient for a very long time.
Joy: yeah I mean, we’ve been doing this out of our own pockets for three years now.
Isabel: well anything, the hosting comes out of our pockets, any contests that we run come out of our projects, any presents that we buy for Rob’s birthday, or any mailing that we do--anything, comes out of our pockets, and has been for three years. And it just didn’t work out for any of us to be paying as much as $200 a month for our server space, so we are just overwhelmed by your response.
Joy: yeah, I mean, it’s amazing. Like you said, we can’t thank the fans enough. It’s so encouraging, so encouraging, and it just makes me wanna do this for another ten years just to pay the fans back for what they’ve done because it’s an amazing gift. Every single person, even if you just donated like, two dollars, it means so much to us.
Isabel: We appreciate everyone who donated to us.
Joy: Yes, we did not expect this at all. We were thinking, “We can get like 50 bucks to help us along” And this was just..I’m still in shock. I can’t even make a sentence about it. It was just amazing.
Tara: Well, let’s just put it this way: you guys made us literally speechless and as you can tell, that’s very, very hard to do and--we don’t shut up.
Isabel: We don’t, we don’t.
[Laughing]
Isabel: Well, we were speechless for a good one minute, and we haven’t stop writing about it since because sometimes we go through ups and downs on the site where we don’t know if we should continue with what we’re doing because we don’t know if people appreciate it, or if anybody’s coming to the site and there was a long time where we were considering about shutting down because there just wasn’t--we didn’t feel there was a lot of interest in the site, and this just completely validates what we do and blows us out of the water and we just feel good about what we do and what we provide for you guys. And that’s why we do it: For you guys, and thanks!
Joy: We got a lot of emails even from people who couldn’t support us financially just being really encouraging and offering great suggestions and we appreciate every single person who e-mailed.
Isabel: We try to respond to everyone quickly and--
Joy: A lot of the suggestions had a lot to do with finding new hosts and looking into ad-space and things like that and in the past, we’ve never really wanted to do ads and things like that cuz we didn’t want it to seem like, “Oh, we’re being greedy and trying to make money off the site.”
Isabel: No, we wanted it to be completely self-sufficient.
Joy: Right, and like Isabel said, we’ve gotten enough to keep open for four month, which is incredible. But of course we’re looking into long-term options because we don’t want every month to be a scramble for money saying, “Oh, please donate to us.”
Isabel: No, we don’t want to rely on the fans, and a couple of people have e-mailed concerned, “What are you going to do for the long-term?” and that’s what we’re working on. This was just a quick-fix to get us over the big deadline we have before our big bill was due and after this round of donations or whatever, we have a lot of long-term options that we’re considering. Like Joy said, ads are one of them, we’re looking into sponsorships, so we want the site to be self-sufficient.
Joy: So, be looking for some changes around the site, nothing too major, but we will be putting up ads and we’ll try not to make them ugly or distracting or anything like that but even if you can afford to click on a link here and there or buy a movie poster or whatever, we do get a part of that to go towards running the site. So, if you don’t feel like you can just give money to us or whatever but if you ever think, “Hey I wanna buy that off Amazon,” do us a favor and go through our link.
Isabel: Yeah, go through our link because we get paid for that.
Joy: I’m still just overwhelmed.
Isabel: Yeah. I’m just thinking about it with a smile on face that people love us so much that they want us to keep doing what we’re doing, and that’s great.
Joy: Exactly, exactly.
Isabel: Roanne also had a question, she asked if Pattinson Online closed, what would we miss most? And what would we miss most? I would say, doing this. Every--I can’t pick one thing it’s just so all encompassing. It comes with so many different facets like friendships and business and
Tara: We’ve built so many relationships and friendships though Pattinson online and it’s been so much fun and keeping the fans up-to-date with news, and pictures, and interviews, just I don’t know…it really for me, and I think you know, I can speak for you guys, aw, well, it’s a lot of fun and it brings a lot of happiness, I think, too and so I would really miss that if this site went down it would take a piece of me away, seriously.
Isabel: I think all of us too we can’t work on something for so long and not feel attached to it
Joy: yeah it’s been a huge part of our lives for three years now and that’s not something you can lose without feeling something
Isabel: and we’ve gone through ups and downs like through the site not just with what’s happening with the site but we became really good friends because we’ve worked on the site because
Isabel: Well, one of the last things we’re gonna do, since we’ve gotten a couple of requests from people which kind of also surprises us since we don’t really think anybody cares about what Joy, Tara or I, or what we do on the site. So, people wanna know things about us that we’re not really sure what to tell you guys so we thought that we’d just sort of interview each other and you can kinda know about us through that. We don’t like talking about ourselves
Joy: this is totally unscripted
Isabel: Yeah, completely unscripted, so please, don’t judge us.
Joy: Well, maybe just a little bit.
Isabel: Okay, yeah, just a little bit.
[Laughter]
So Joy, when you go to work, what do you do?
Joy: when I go to work, what do I do? Well, let’s see, I wake up in the morning. I’m always late for work, which is a sad fact, but very true.
Isabel: Well, tell people what you do!
Joy: Well, I’m a teacher. I teach third grade. And I try to teach my kids responsibility like being on time for things--but I never am…
Isabel: And like pronouncing words properly.
Joy: Pronouncing words properly. No, seriously, I love teaching third grade. I taught second grade for two years and now I’ve been teaching third grade for four years and I love it. I love both ages cuz they’re just so fun. I have a great group of kids this year, I’m so spoiled. I mean, I don’t know what I did to deserve this but they’re so cute and so good. But anyway, yeah I spend my whole day chasing around 18 eight year olds they’re just they’re awesome and I’m also like the lead teacher of the upper elementary at my school which basically means I’m in charge of like ten other teachers, which is not as glamorous as it sounds, actually. Basically I just am the mediator between the administrators and the teachers, which is kinda fun, I enjoy it. But you know, my job is not super exciting. I love being a teacher, I absolutely love it but you know, I don’t feel like its anything super special. I just I go to work and I have fun with my kids all day and then I go home.
Isabel: Awesome.
Joy: Alright, let’s see, we’ll go around the room…
[Laughter]
I feel like I’m in a room. Don’t you guys feel like you’re in a room? Let’s see, okay, Tara…a good question…okay, Tara, Tara, Tara….if you could have any job in the entire world, what would you choose?
Tara: Right now, since I started working in pharmacy I would like to be a pharmacist, if it weren’t a lot of work I would love to be a pharmacist it’s just so many qualifications. But I’m a pharmacy tech and it’s a lot of fun. It’s in the medical field and you do make a difference, you’re giving people pills, which pretty much makes them….
Laughter
Live and breathe but also it’s great because you have that knowledge that you are helping someone out but you’re not really hands on with the patient so it’s not really “Get me my bedpan!” Or you know, “I need a change” So you know you’re making a difference in someone else’s life without--
Isabel: --But you’re not wiping their bum.
Laughter
Tara: Exactly. And it’s just a lot of fun. So I would definitely if..yeah. Pharmacist.
Isabel: Awesome.
Joy: That’s awesome, good fro you, doing what you wanna do.
Tara: Okay, Isabel….if you could choose between either acting or singing, what would you rather do?
Isabel: Oh, acting. Nobody wants to hear me sing.
Laughter.
Joy: I want you to. Go, do it!
Isabel: No. No! Nobody wants to hear me sing. Actually my music--I used to think I could sing and my music teacher in fourth grade was kind of--kind of pulled me aside a bit and said you know, you really are tone deaf….
Joy: (Laughing) That’s so sad..
Isabel: Yeah, sad! And I know ever since then, I’ve never really like sang to anyone, I only sing to myself when I think no one’s around and I’ve had a few significant others that have picked up on it but hardly anyone know or has heard me singing ever. I think I can act so yeah, acting, probably. But I don’t want to be an actor at all.
Joy: Well, what do you do now?
Isabel: What do I do now? Oh, I’m an administrative assistant by day slash au pair by night. No, I am an administrative assistant, and I am an au pair. I work for a family that runs a couple businesses and I basically make sure that the office is running and I help take care of the kids sometimes so I would say I multitask a lot. I don’t do really anything one thing specific like the same thing everyday there’s so many different things to do in the office so I guess I administrate and I assist so I am an administrative assistant. So, my life is very boring. No, actually that’s not true. It’s actually too exciting for its own good sometimes. Okay, Joy--
Joy: yes?
Isabel: What is the last book you read and did you like it?
Joy: Good question. Actually, the last book I read was Roald Dahl’s biography, Boy, which was absolutely hilarious, I mean I love Roald Dahl, I’m always having my
kids read his books. But one of my fellow teachers recommended it to me, she said “it’s really really funny, you should read it” so I got it from the library and I was actually, I’ve actually been reading it having physical therapy for my knee I had a knee injury which is not fun and painful so to distract myself I’ve been reading so I’ll lie there and I’ve been reading the book, Boy and I just finished it yesterday actually and it’s so funny and clever you know? I mean if you’ve read any of Roald Dahl’s books he writes his fiction just like his nonfiction he’s just so clever, I mean I really enjoyed it it was a great book I don’t’ know what I’m gonna read next though. I have a ton of books that I’ve bought and I just haven’t gotten around to reading which is sad because I love to read but I never have time that’s like the only good thing bout physical therapy is that I get to read. Which is sad.
Isabel: No, that’s great. I should check it out, I love Roald Dahl.
Joy: Okay, let’s see…Tara…what music have you been listening to recently?
Tara: Oh, cool…I’ve been listening to a lot of the Beatles recently--
Joy: Excellent.
Tara: Yeah, as you all know, I pretty much listened to the Beatles in my mother’s womb and so I’ve been kind of--I’ve just been getting in the mood again and just listening to them cuz It’s kind of it brings me back and it reminds me of my dad and I have a lot of emotional attachment too the Beatles
Isabel: I do too, my dad loved the Beatles
Tara: Yeah, so its’ really nice and also the twilight soundtrack there really are a couple of great songs on there that I like to listen to. So, that’s what’s on Tara’s iPod. Okay,, Isabel….I’m coming over for dinner, what are you gonna cook?
Isabel: Is this because you want me to cook? Or you think I’m a good cook? What is this, what is this really about?
Tara: Both.
Joy: She’s hungry.
Isabel: She’s hungry. Okay, probably chicken pot pie because its the most homemade thing I can think of making and everybody really likes it when I make it.
Joy: Oh make me one!
Isabel: So, I’d probably--
Joy: --Send it to me in Thailand!
Isabel: Send it to you in Thailand…I’d probably make some chicken pot pie and greens on the side with some sort of alcoholic beverage
Tara: Nice.
Isabel: A gin and tonic
Tara: Oooh.
Isabel: That’s what I would serve you for dinner.
Tara: Excellent
Isabel: Awesome.
And fresh baked bread
Joy: Oooh you’re making me hungry!
Isabel: Yeah. Well I make bread and it’s delicious. Joy it’s your turn. If you could be any fictional character who would you be?
Joy: Oh that’s so hard! Oh gosh. Man, that’s a hard question. There’s like a hundred answers in my head.
Isabel: Just pick one, it doesn’t have to be--just pick one you’d wanna be right now.
Joy: Right now, I wanna be Bella swan so I can make out with Edward Cullen. True story.
Isabel: True story. Truefax.
Joy: Truefax. Seriously, I there’s so many great characters. I would love to be in a Jane Austen novel.
Isabel: Who wouldn’t?
Joy: Seriously. I’d love to be in Harry potter so I could be a wizard and do awesome stuff. That’s be pretty sweet. But at the moment just because I’m totally on the twilight high right now, I’m like, I totally wanna be Bella. Like I’m the only person right now, I mean, come on. Please.
Laughter
Ok, Tara, best question ever. What do you want for Christmas?
Tara: what I want for Christmas…you know? I would be happy if everyone just sent me a pound of coffee
Isabel: Nice.
Tara: I want like a big Starbucks gift basket.
Isabel: yeah but not star bucks. There’s so much better coffee that’s out there.
Tara: Dunkin Donuts. Which is you know, like okay, its ghetto coffee to star bucks but still its’ delicious.
Isabel: No I like Dunkin Donuts coffee
Tara: yeah I love Dunkin donuts coffee
Joy: You should like give out your address so people can start sending you coffee
Tara: yeah
Laughter
Tara: But yeah coffee and really, as schmaltzy and cheesy as it may sound I just want everybody to be happy and everybody to get what they want and..
Joy: World peace
Tara: Vote for me, world peace, that’s what I want for Christmas
Isabel: Oh, gosh
Joy: Excellent, excellent
Tara: Alright I’m gonna ask you two and you pick the better of the ones you wanna ask you. The first question I have in mind is what seven deadly sin would you be
Laughter
Joy: That is a great question!
Isabel: Oh, no
Tara: Or you could, or what one album would you listen to for the rest of your life if you had to choose?
Isabel: I can’t do the music one, there’d be too many. I guess I’ll have to answer the seven deadly one cuz there’s only seven of them. It’s not like I have to choose from many. I would be lust. I’m completely lust. That’s who I am
Joy: Sloth.
Isabel: No, I’m not gonna get into why..
Joy: yeah, let’s not…
Isabel: no. Alright guys, thanks for listening to this edition of the Pattycast. Again, thank you thank you thank you to all of our wonderful listeners and supporters and everyone who loves us and everything. Goodbye from Isabel
Joy: And Joy
Tara: And from Tara.
