I can’t really understand it even now. It does have an angle which is attached to something quite primal in girls. I guess people want it to define them, like ‘I’m a Twilight fan.’ That’s crazy to me. I think people really just like being part of a crowd. There’s something just tremendously exciting about hyping yourself up to that level.

Every one of us knows the time, before something happens between a couple, when you’re still totally insecure: Does the other person like me or not? That is definitely the riskiest time! This moment can last an eternity. To this sweet uncertainty also comes anxiety, especially if it’s the first time for both people. I believe this worry stirs up desire. And in this case, the period of desire lasts almost four books [The Twilight Saga].

This comparison seems to decrease as the films go. Fans don’t see me like that anymore. Contrarily to the first movie they can differentiate my character and me. At the start when I did public appearances, for them I was Edward 100%. I could read it in their eyes. Many lacked control which scared me. Everything has changed and now when I do interviews I am as honest and sincere as possible. I’m not Edward and I make sure it shows.

I think I’ve become more old-fashioned. I feel like I’m already turning middle-aged now. It’s quite nice to be doing a series of films [The Twilight Saga] that a lot of people think uphold positive virtues. Some people actually think the films are a good influence on their kids.

Something about kneeling down, because I had to kneel down so much in the ‘Twilight’ movies and it always looks really awkward. I’ve actually got quite long thighs and it doesn’t work.

Um, what did I have to learn? I guess I had to learn how to run properly, instead of like—in the last two, I’ve always run with a kind of limp slash skip and I had to sort of look like I could run more solidly this time, so I spent a lot of time on a giant treadmill; like a kind of—like one of those wheels that mice run around in and got filmed doing it to improve my form. I guess that was one of the big things.

I like the glitter lube stuff, I thought that was really funny. I was just like, ‘I did not sign that!’

On the first shot on the first day, I kind of strained one of my ass cheeks. My ass just couldn’t take the strain of the first day. And they had to bring in a physiotherapist and I, uh, had to have a butt massage on the first day.

Especially in New Moon, and actually in the whole series, I’ve never played it thinking, ‘Oh, I’m in a series of girls’ films and I’m doing something just for girls.’ I don’t feel like I’m doing an animated Tiger Beat, every week. I like doing romantic scenes. I felt like a lot of the storyline in New Moon is very heartbreaking and true. I didn’t think I was doing something, just for the sake of romance. I thought, in a lot of ways, that it was a really sad story.

I have very, very specific ideas about how I want to do my work and how I want to be perceived, to the point of ridiculousness, sometimes. I don’t listen to anyone else. That’s why I don’t have a publicist or anything. I can’t stand it, if someone is trying to tell me to do something, which is maybe a mistake sometimes. I like being meticulous, and it’s quite difficult, as an actor, to have that much control. The good thing about the Twilight series is that it does give you a lot more control over tiddly little things, which I want to have. I’m a control freak about it.

If I literally could go back and do it again, I would try to do it better. I had wanted to be better.

I didn’t do anything out of the ordinary to be so famous. It all comes down to those five minutes of emotions that you give to people and that’s nice to feel. It’s part of the magic and everything that comes from making movies.
The expectations, the dreams, the fantasies; it’s all an illusion. I’m a very normal guy, I can promise you that.

I don’t really need to do stuff to relax or get away because all my interests are part of my job. Like I’ll watch movies to be inspired to do other movies. I read books to be inspired. I listen to music to be inspired to write music. Everything I do is to create something.

…girls scream out for Edward, not Robert. I still can’t get a date.

He’s a character that can’t change his condition, he didn’t choose his fate. .. Imagine what would you feel like if you knew you would never grow old and that you would live forever. And what’s worse, you didn’t look for it. You become a sort of Superman without even wanting to be that, you were just a 17 year old kid. You must feel a huge impotence and frustration. Instead of believing you’re hero, you’re a person who can’t find himself and doesn’t know who he is. Understanding that has been fundamental in understanding Edward. That very human side of him is what I love about him and I feel like I can relate to that. There’s something we all find hard to change and face about ourselves.

Music is the other side of me, it’s one of the things that complete me and I wouldn’t want to leave it aside for anything in the world.

In the end you have your real life and the one they make up in inteviews, not caring if what they’re saying is true or false. What’s true is that I’m too normal and I give them no material to write, so I’m an easy prey for make up stories. I should go wild and do crazy things so they have something to write about. My flaw for those tabloids is that I’m too calm and quiet (laughs).

I’ve had to develop strategies to go out with my friends and have a normal life. It’s the dark side of fame. But I don’t complain. I just assume that I have to deal with it now. Not everything can be perfect. I have so much already, having the opportunity of living from acting. It would be unfair to say that I’m unlucky.

I think it’s a story about what it means to commit to a feeling and to the person that you love. Above all, it’s about finding someone to love despite having to fight so many problems that might show up. What hooks you about the movie, I’m convinced about it, is that it talks about the fear of what can happen to you if you fall in love and give yourself away completely. Realising how far you can go for love, passion and being amazed by it. People identify with it more than you can imagine. To me it’s not even a story about vampires, but about feelings that we’ve all felt before. It talks about the fear of feeling those things. It’s a movie with so many meanings, that’s why I like it and I think that’s why people like it too.

I don’t like to read them or be aware of what they say. At all. It’s something I avoid completely. I do my work, live my life and follow my intuitions. I make my decisions the best way that I can and that’s it. If you pay attention to any of that, you’ll lose. I’m aware of that and I try to be very careful about it. I try to live away from that, saving myself disgusts and headaches.

I feel like I’m the same person I’ve always been and I feel I have all the freedom in the world. I’m still doing my job as best as I can, and most importantly, I still enjoy it. I admit that I do feel more safe in movie sets than on the streets. I never thought that one day that would happen, but I feel that in movie sets I can be myself, and be more relaxed and focused on what I have to do. When I go out for a walk, I have to be aware of everything that’s around me and that’s out of my control. On a familiar set at least you know what to expect most of the times (laughs).

Seeing girls screaming around me is so bizarre. Sometimes I can’t believe it’s all about me. It’s like I’m living inside a movie, but I wake up and it’s all real. I see that it’s real and how much my life has changed. I still don’t know in which ways my life has changed, I’m still figuring that out. And I don’t know why but I think it’s going to take me a long time to figure it out. I guess it’s normal, don’t you think?

I can say that everything has happened very fast. Like I’m fast-forwarding through life. Like everything around me is happening at 1000 m/p. The way you fast-forward a movie, just like that.

I wasn’t expecting having this much success. It’s something I still can’t understand. The truth is that in certain occasions I feel dizzy and I still don’t know how to handle so much attention

It’s really funny how everyone looks at Edward as the hero, and he’s continuously saved by the damsel in distress(Bella).

I don’t know if I like him as a person. He is a little straight-laced for my liking. He is not rebellious. I think that should be respected.

At the end of the day, it’s just a part. You just go into it and you live your life. You’re walking down the street and — this a bad analogy — you step on a stone and it flies away and you don’t know where it’s going. And then you’re just trying not to drown. And that’s my life.

It made me feel really tough. Really hard. I don’t think I’ve ever won a fight in my life. It was cool.

Besides, I’m sick of people saying: ‘You can only make those Twilight films, you’re nothing more than a fleeting star.’ I refuse to accept that!

Somehow, work has become my best refuge. Even though it may sound ridiculous, as soon as I get some free time I start reading scripts. I feel somewhat frustrated for not going to college, so I try desperately to self educate. I have brought with me to Vancouver like 100 books, they’re all scattered all over the hotel room.
