Composer Carter Burwell has a wonderful section on his website where he tells the whole story behind “Bella’s Lullaby”, the song he wrote for Twilight back in 2008. He also talks about Rob being chosen to play the piece in the film.
I came to Oregon to meet Catherine Hardwicke and see some of the film she was shooting, Twilight. She mentioned that the producing company, Summit Entertainment, had just requested that a new scene be added to the film. The scene existed in the novel but hadn’t originally been part of the screenplay (films are not one-to-one translations of books). In this scene Edward would play piano for Bella. I wasn’t officially working on the film at that point and they didn’t know what Rob Pattinson (Edward) should play during the shoot. This is not an unusual situation - many films have an actor sitting at a keyboard, swaying back and forth, pretending to play music that was only written after the film has been shot and edited. This case was unusual in that Rob is a fine musician, and fully capable of playing the piano or probably any other instrument.
He also discusses Summit’s desire to change his composition to fit the target audience.
The suggestion that teenage girls would want a sweet tune was somewhat condescending, and that was something I tried to avoid in this score. Also I don’t believe it’s possible to know how music will affect someone else, even though film composers claim to. The unpredicability is what makes it interesting (although I understand that’s not what the investors want to hear). And can you imagine what it would be like - as it was occasionally on this project - trying to compose music to satisfy a director who’s trying to satisfy a male executive who’s trying to satisfy ten million teenage girls?

“My friend Robert Pattinson told me about a movie he was making called “How To Be” and that he was to play a guy who was a bit of a super loser…I said that I was going to try and write the theme tune for the movie based on what he had told me and I went home and wrote it in a couple of days.”

“Rob is a really natural musician, he’s amazing on the piano - although he always claims he doesn’t really know what he’s doing, but I think he’s just very modest.”

In a promotional video for the release of his debut album ‘A Winter Tale,’ British musician Bobby Long talks about meeting Rob and co-writing ‘Let Me Sign’ with him. He also talks about how the song ended up in the ‘Twilight’ soundtrack and how that affected his career as a musician. He mentions Rob beginning around the 7:00 mark.
A new video has surfaced of Rob singing in ‘Songs From a Room’. The video is longer than the previously released one. It also does not have voice over.

MTV unleashes insane musical mayhem along with a sneak peek at an exclusive clip from “The Twilight Saga: New Moon” and commentary from cast members in the network’s first-ever Halloween special, “Ulalume: Howling at New Moon.” The one-hour program, premiering on MTV at 9pm ET/PT on Friday, October 30, 2009, will feature explosive performances by Paramore, AFI, Dead By Sunrise and Kid Cudi as they rock the stage from MTV’s Ulalume Halloween Festival, hosted by tattoo vixen and star of L.A. Ink Kat Von D. The show will also air on MTV2 at 10pm ET/PT, and on mtvU, MTV’s 24 hour college network, at 11 pm ET/PT.

The Twilight Saga: New Moon: The Score is now available for pre-order at www.amazon.com. The album is to be released on November 24th.
As you know, the score is being composed by Alexandre Desplat - recent recipient of a Hollywood Award. Twilight’s score was composed by Carter Burwell, whose music will still be a part of The Twilight Saga: New Moon as well.
Desplat’s piece, “The Meadow,” is also going to be appearing on the official soundtrack for the film, and a few seconds of that song were previewed on the UK’s Amazon page.
The response to that particularly piece was overwhelmingly positive, so it seems inevitable that the New Moon score will be captivating as well.
