Already from the time that I was 18 they [Rob’s two sisters] explained to me: if you hadn’t started styling your hair with gel, then you still would have always been one of these plain, boring people.

I was obsessed with a writer called Martin Amis when I was a teenager. I read everything. Every single time I went to a bookshop, I’d see if he has other books. I used to buy multiple editions of his books. Martin, Van Morrison and Jimi Hendrix—they were my people when I was growing up. I’d obsessively collect all their stuff.

One of the things that really annoys me about the rise of all these celebrity websites is that anyone who becomes famous—people are so desperate to prove that [celebrities] are lower than the average person on the street. Why destroy any hope for anyone else? When I grew up, looking at movies like ‘One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest’ and stuff, it made me want to do things. And you don’t want to believe that someone you admire… [is an a--hole].

I used to dance all the time till I was 16 and I was at a wedding in Seattle. I didn’t realize at the time that Canadian beer is like really strong, like 7.8 percent or something. And I was just going nuts on the dance floor and my dad was like, ‘What are you doing?’ I’ve never been able to get that out of my head. I’m so self-conscious about it.

Well, I’ve been beaten up a few times. I was a bit of an idiot when I was younger. Always unprovoked, in my eyes anyway. It was just after I first started acting and I liked to behave like an actor and that generally provoked a lot of people into hitting me.

I was 13 years old and looked like a girl when I started to work as a model. It was a relatively successful career since the androgynous look was in, so I got to work for a few teenage magazines, but never got any bigger assignments since I didn’t look masculine enough. I was really thin with a small potbelly, it didn’t work out in the long run since I didn’t want to work out to look more masculine and I didn’t want to diet to look more feminine.

I think deep down, people don’t really change, but it has varied the way that my friends see me, even my family. It’s weird, because the truth is that people in your life repeatedly treat you differently. But you’ll always know who your true friends are. I hope that there will come a moment where they, my family, and myself will get back to normal, because they know me, they know who I am and we have the same dreams. I don’t have the feeling that I’ve changed, I think I’m the same.

I don’t even remember where I left my car (in Los Angeles). It’s probably been towed away by now. That’s my only immovable possession and now I don’t know where it is! It was important to me because it was the first car I ever bought. Made me feel like a man, buying a car.

I don’t have much of a life outside of acting, I don’t have a group to hang out with. I have two friends that I grew up with and that’s it. I could wake up one day and disappear without leaving anything behind.

I got expelled from my school when I was 12 – I was quite bad. I never ever did my homework. I always turned up for lessons as I liked my teachers but my report said I didn’t try very hard.

I’ve never went to acting school. One day my dad was at a restaurant and he saw a bunch of pretty girls, so he asked them where were they going to and they said Theater club, so my dad told me I had to go there. It was so embarrassing.

I really wasn’t very much of a rebel. I’m seen by people now as more of a rebel which is strange. I don’t like doing what people tell me to do. I don’t deliberately rebel against them.

I was at a small private school in London. I wasn’t very academic. My dad said to me, ‘OK, you might as well leave, since you’re not working very hard’. When I told I him wanted to stay on for my A-levels, he said I’d have to pay my own fees, then he’d pay me back if I got good grades.

I never really considered myself attractive, really. I was always kind of gangly in school.

[School reports] were always pretty bad - I never ever did my homework. I always turned up for lessons as I liked my teachers but my report said I didn’t try very hard.

I got expelled from my school when I was 12 - I was quite bad!

[My favourite teacher was] probably my English teacher because she got me into writing instead of just answering the question. I used to hand in homework with 20 pages of nonsense and she’d still mark it. She was a really amazing teacher.

I quite liked Sharkey and George and then there was a cartoon with rapper MC Hammer in it - Hammertime - I loved that cartoon, it was genius! They don’t make cartoons like that anymore.

I started doing a paper round when I was about 10. I started earning £10 a week and then I was obsessed with earning money until I was about 15.

Up until I was 12 my sisters used to dress me up as a girl and introduce me as ‘Claudia’! Twelve was a turning point as I moved to a mixed school and then I became cool and discovered hair gel.

We didn’t have packed lunches at my school. I was a lunch monitor as well - I used to take everyone’s chips!
